The Influence of Black Culture on Fashion Trends

Posted on

Fashion trends constantly evolve and often reflect the cultural zeitgeist of a given era. From the Harlem Renaissance to contemporary streetwear, Black Culture has been instrumental in setting trends and influencing the fashion industry.

Despite their significant contributions to the industry, Black fashion designers, models, stylists, and other industry professionals have often faced systemic barriers and discrimination in their careers.

Recognizing the impact of Black Culture on fashion acknowledges their talent and hard work. It also helps to promote greater diversity and inclusivity in the industry.

In honor of Black History Month, let’s explore how Black Culture has shaped fashion trends throughout history and continues to inspire designers today.

The Harlem Renaissance

The Harlem Renaissance of the 1920s and ’30s was a pivotal moment in American history. This movement significantly impacted culture—including art, literature, music, and fashion.

Hence the name, the Harlem Renaissance originated in the African-American community of Harlem, New York. It was considered the “rebirth of African-American arts” because it empowered the Black community to develop a sense of identity through fashion. It was a time of self-expression and cultural pride.

We can credit this era as the grandfather of many streetwear trends we see today. It encouraged people to move away from drab, conventional clothing. Instead, it encouraged them to embrace vibrant patterns, bold colors, and daring silhouettes.

streetwear and sneaker culture

Streetwear and Sneaker Culture

In addition to the Harlem Renaissance, did you know that high-end streetwear has roots in hip-hop? In the early days, it was all about standing out from the crowd—and Black Culture pioneered this style of dress.

How Hip-Hop Music Influenced Streetwear

Rappers like Biggie Smalls, A Tribe Called Quest, and Outkast brought their own style to the genre, mixing bold statements with comfortable clothing.

For example, Biggie contributed to the legacy of the Coogi sweater. Even after he passed away, rappers like A$AP Rocky and Drake still donned the Coogi look.

Many brands have collaborated with rappers and hip-hop artists to release limited-edition clothing lines. This trend lends to the exclusivity of streetwear and shows how much influence Black Culture has had on fashion.

old school vs. new school

Old School vs. New School

In the context of hip-hop, old school fashion trends refer to the clothing and accessories that were popular during the early days of the genre, particularly in the 1980s and early 1990s.

These trends include oversized clothing, tracksuits, gold chains, bucket hats, and high-top sneakers, among others. This style was often associated with the “golden age” of hip-hop and reflected the culture and values of the time.

New school fashion trends in hip-hop have evolved to reflect the changing cultural landscape and the influence of contemporary fashion. These trends include more fitted clothing, designer labels, and a greater emphasis on individual style and creativity.

As you may know, athleisure is all the rage nowadays. The trend has become popular among hip-hop artists and fans, with collaborations between fashion brands and musicians becoming increasingly common. Streetwear and luxury fashion labels are also part of the new school look.

Despite these changes, some old school fashion trends have remained popular in hip-hop, such as baggy jeans and graphic t-shirts. Additionally, some newer trends have been influenced by the old school, such as the resurgence of retro sportswear and vintage sneakers.

Both old school and new school fashion trends have played an essential role in shaping the style and identity of hip-hop culture.

sneaker culture

The Impact of Sneaker Culture

Sneaker culture has been a huge part of hip-hop since the 1980s, when Run-DMC released their hit single “My Adidas” and made the brand iconic.

Today, sneaker culture is even more popular, with limited-edition collaborations between brands and musicians becoming increasingly common.

Black artists like Run-DMC and Jay-Z have made sneakers a staple of their style. Jay-Z has a long history of collaborating with Puma. In fact, he wore the Puma Ralph Sampson Lo sneaker at the 2023 Super Bowl.

Many celebrities have their own signature sneakers, and some have even launched their own sneaker lines. Read more about sneaker culture and how it has been influenced by the Black community.

fashion icons and representation

Fashion Icons and Representation

Modern fashion icons and representation contribute to Black Culture, and vice versa. Black fashion designers, models, and icons have long been at the forefront of the industry, pushing boundaries and redefining what it means to be fashionable.

These individuals have used their platforms to advocate for inclusivity and diversity in fashion, contributing to broader recognition and celebration of Black Culture in the industry.

Here are a few of the names that have had a lasting impact on fashion:

Dapper Dan

Dapper Dan is an iconic fashion designer who became famous for creating designs that blended high-end luxury with streetwear. He is known for creating outfits for numerous celebrities, including LL Cool J and Eric B. & Rakim. Dan is credited with creating the “ghetto fabulous” style popular in the 1980s and 1990s.

Naomi Campbell

Naomi Campbell is a British model and actress who is one of history’s most recognized and influential Black models. She has graced the covers of numerous fashion magazines and has walked the runway for some of the most prominent fashion designers in the world. Campbell has also advocated for diversity and inclusion in the fashion industry.

Virgil Abloh

The legendary Virgil Abloh was an American fashion designer known for his work as the artistic director of Louis Vuitton’s menswear line. He is also the founder of the fashion brand Off-White. Abloh was credited with bringing streetwear to the forefront of high fashion. Unfortunately, Abloh passed away in Nov. 2021, but his legacy will live on.

manufacture streetwear

How to Manufacture Your Own Streetwear-Inspired Designs

Scrappy Apparel can help you manufacture streetwear-inspired apparel by providing you with the resources and expertise to bring your vision to life. We are a one-stop-shop for apparel from the waist up. We can produce t-shirts, hoodies, hats, and more.

If you don’t know where to start, here are a couple of ideas to spark inspiration:

The Monster Print

At Scrappy, we call large format screen printing The Monster Print. It’s our signature approach to manufacture designs that are larger than life. Most apparel companies have a max print size of 14″ x 17.” But with The Monster Print, we will print the design as big as the smallest garment allows for the entire run of garments. Our approach gives you maximum creativity and design freedom.

All Over Sublimation Printing

Sublimation printing is an excellent way to create streetwear-inspired designs that are bright, bold, and full of color. Instead of printing a design onto the garment, sublimation transfers ink directly into the fabric. This results in a more vibrant and saturated design that will never crack or fade.

Custom Hats

We have one of the best custom headwear programs in the world. (Seriously!) Whether you want a trucker hat or a beanie, we have the tools to create the perfect custom hat for your brand. We offer a wide range of customization options, including embroidery and private labeling.

Hats are a staple of streetwear. With our custom headwear program, you can create hats that represent your brand and your culture.

With the hustle and bustle of Fashion Week season, it can be hard to stay on top of the latest trends—especially with all the new labels, collections, and fashion shows popping up every day.

That way, you can decide which trends are beneficial to incorporate into your own apparel.

Fashion Week isn’t just for luxury fashion brands, either. Many smaller, up-and-coming labels often make their debut at Fashion Week and can inspire the next big trends.

How the Fashion Weeks Began

America’s first fashion show dates back to 1903 at Ehrich Brothers, an NYC specialty store. By the 1920s, fashion shows had become common—but they were all held behind closed doors.

In 1943, the genius fashion publicist Eleanor Lambert (a.k.a. “The Godmother of Fashion”) came up with the concept of hosting many shows during the same week. She called this “Fashion Press Week.” The purpose of the event was to offer alternatives to French fashion during World War II, when travel to Paris was restricted.

The first official Paris Fashion Week occurred in 1973. The Milan Fashion Week concept, called “Settimana Della Moda,” rose to fame in 1975. And in 1984, London Fashion Week was born as a cluster of events that all took place in a single season. The events were organized by the British Fashion Council.

Today, these four cities are known as the “Big 4” of Fashion Week. And with all their shows happening during the same week, the fashion industry can get a full preview of what’s hot in each city.

How Popular are the “Big 4” Fashion Weeks Today?

The numbers don’t lie. Let’s look at some stats.

New York Fashion Week

Each year, over 200,000 guests attend New York Fashion Week, and there are more than 300 shows throughout the week. The event generates over 900 million dollars for the city’s economy.

Paris Fashion Week

Paris Fashion Week generated over 39 million actions and 152 million video views across various social media platforms during the event. Now, that’s what we call influence!

Milan Fashion Week

2022 was Milan Fashion Week’s best-performing year to date, despite the challenges the COVID-19 pandemic presented over the last few years. The event ended with over 90 billion euros in revenue.

London Fashion Week

In 2019, London Fashion Week attracted visitors from over 49 countries.

As you can see, the Big 4 Fashion Weeks are as popular as ever. These events are some of the most influential in the entire fashion industry.

Now that you understand the significance of Fashion Week season, let’s talk about how you can stay up-to-date with the latest trends.

How to Tap Into Fashion Week Trends

(Even if you aren’t attending any events)

Although attending the actual shows can give you an edge over the competition, it’s not necessary to physically be there. You don’t have to be at Fashion Week to stay up-to-date with the trendiest designs and labels (thanks to the Internet and social media!)

Here are some of our best tips for keeping up with Fashion Week trends:

1. Follow Fashion Influencers on Social Media

Some of the most influential people in fashion today are Instagram and YouTube influencers. Following their accounts will give you first-hand access to the hottest new trends before everyone else sees them.

2. Subscribe to Fashion Newsletters and Magazines

Many popular fashion magazines and websites have daily or weekly newsletters that feature exclusive previews, interviews, and reports from Fashion Week events around the world. This can help you stay ahead of the curve when it comes to what’s trending during Fashion Week season.

3. Set up Google Alerts for Related Key Terms

Google Alerts is a service from Google that allows you to monitor what is being published and said on the Internet about any topic you choose. With Google Alerts, web results, news articles, blog posts, or other content related to your chosen topic are sent directly to your emails as they become available. You can create multiple alerts with different search criteria and frequency of delivery.

Google Alerts are a great way to get notified whenever your favorite designers, labels, and trends are mentioned in the media. This will help you keep an eye on what’s new and fresh during Fashion Week season.

4. Use Social Listening Tools

Social listening tools enable you to track conversations about specific topics on social media. This can help you see what people are saying about certain shows, designers, labels, and trends before and during Fashion Week. This can give you an insight into which trends are resonating the most with your target audience.

For example, Mention is a tool that allows you to track conversations surrounding target keywords. (Ex. New York Fashion Week)

You can see what people are saying about Fashion Weeks, your brands, your competitors, or any key phrases you think would be helpful for your research. Pretty cool, right?

How to Manufacture Fashion-Forward Apparel and Sell It to Your Customers

Once you’re in the know about the latest trends in the fashion industry, it’s time to decide which ones to incorporate into your apparel designs.

We don’t recommend following every single trend, especially ones that don’t align with your brand. However, it can be helpful to tap into trends that simultaneously increase your exposure and frame your brand in a positive light.

Netflix.Shop: Capitalizing on Branded Merchandise

Posted on

When most people think of Netflix, they think of the giant streaming platform with exclusive shows and low monthly subscription fees.

However, there is another profitable pillar of the Netflix business model. As of June 2021, the brand has officially entered the merchandise sector by launching Netflix.shop. The online site features exclusive collectibles and high-quality merchandise tied to the brand that cannot be found anywhere else.

Let’s break down Netflix.shop’s marketing strategy, including its use of influencers to promote the brand, and the importance of having a strong merchandise fulfillment partner when selling custom apparel.

The Rise of Netflix

Since its arrival on the streaming market over a decade ago, Netflix has become a major force in entertainment. Thanks to its library of classic and original shows, it’s been able to solidify itself as a go-to for viewers looking for quality entertainment.

According to Licensing International, about $128 billion was spent on licensed goods associated with shows, movies, and characters in the worldwide entertainment sector in 2019. Since Netflix is already a powerhouse in the industry, it was only a matter of time before the company capitalized on this popularity by launching an online store selling official Netflix merchandise. As its reach continues to grow, so does its fanbase. Netflix has reached a global customer base of over 203 million paying subscribers. Netflix’s huge fan base provides an ideal platform for the company to market its products and drive sales. Not only does this make a lot of money for Netflix, but it also helps develop brand loyalty amongst viewers.

The Netflix merch shop is filled with items ranging from t-shirts and mugs to exclusive collectibles any fan would love.

All these products feature popular characters or logos from some of the most watched shows available on the platform such as Wednesday, Stranger Things, and Narcos. The exclusive merchandise offers viewers new ways to engage with and display their love for their favorite shows.

Netflix’s Marketing Strategy

Netflix has successfully leveraged strategic marketing techniques to drive sales of its products, build customer loyalty, and increase brand visibility.

The company’s approach includes creating high-quality clothing and providing exclusive deals. By engaging influencers to promote its brand, Netflix has gained more exposure and allowed customers to exhibit their fandom in creative ways.

Netflix encourages customer engagement by offering discounts on their store items or providing special editions only available through the platform. Through these initiatives, Netflix has reached a wider base of potential customers and generated sustained interest in its products.

Netflix’s marketing strategy has undoubtedly strengthened its visibility across all platforms, while at the same time, offering fans new ways of expressing their love for Netflix productions via branded items that suit their style.

Netflix’s marketing strategy of promoting merchandise through influencers has allowed them to achieve great success in selling its products.

According to Epsilon’s research, 80% of consumers are more likely to make a purchase when brands offer personalized experiences. When customers feel like they are part of something exclusive, their enthusiasm increases, and they are more likely to make purchases that are associated with their favorite shows or celebrities.

This feeling of exclusivity is something that Netflix has capitalized on by offering exclusive deals on limited-edition items and working with influencers to encourage sales from their store.

The success of Netflix.shop is an example of how powerful brand loyalty can be when it comes to sales.

By providing customers with unique products and offering promotional opportunities, Netflix has been able to take advantage of its massive audience to drive sales and create a sense of community among its users.

This strategy has undoubtedly helped the company reach even greater heights in terms of both revenue and popularity.

Using Influencers to Promote Your Brand

Brands can take notes from Netflix.shop and follow their business model. By engaging with influencers, any brand can reach a broader audience and attract sales.

With the rise of digital platforms like YouTube, Instagram, Twitch, and TikTok, more people are becoming social media stars than ever before.

These content creators have substantial fan bases who are passionate about supporting them, making them ideal candidates for advertising merchandise.

With their fans’ loyalty, the influencer and brand can earn profits from custom apparel. Brands can also benefit from influencers by leveraging their online presence to promote events and campaigns.

Brands should utilize influencers to promote their products. After designing custom merch for your business, you can work with influencers to show off your brand.

Influencers can create valuable video content to sell more apparel.

For example, they could feature t-shirts in a try-on haul, or they could produce videos to review the products.

By leveraging strategies such as exclusive deals on limited-edition items paired with engaging promotional campaigns, content creators can help your brand create loyal customers who will keep coming back for more.

Why Fulfillment Services Are Essential

By providing a reliable and efficient fulfillment process, businesses can ensure customers receive their purchased items quickly, accurately, and in good condition. With a brand as large as Netflix, their fulfillment service needs to be top-notch to guarantee repeat business.

Delivery times are crucial when it comes to customer satisfaction and loyalty, so having access to an experienced fulfillment partner is key for any business that wants to stay competitive in the online marketplace.

While influencers and a great marketing strategy can attract customers, you will need to have a fulfillment service in place to deliver your custom apparel to customers. Luckily, that’s where we come in!

Analyzing Taylor Swift’s Merch Business

Posted on

Everyone knows Taylor Swift is famous in the music industry, but did you know she’s also a leader in the merch industry?

Taylor has cracked the code and shown us how powerful a strong brand identity can be by creating an empire in the merch industry that continues to thrive.

While her earnings from merchandise have not been publicly released, they are likely to be in the millions!

Taylor’s story is one that should serve as inspiration for anyone looking to make their mark in the merch world. Her profits from merchandise sales come from her extensive line of products and fast fulfillment service.

Keep reading to discover what she is doing right and what your apparel business can do to duplicate her business model.

taylor swift

The Swift Strategy

Taylor’s merch business began with the success of her first album, Taylor Swift. After gaining publicity and new loyal fans (a.k.a. Swifties), she began designing merchandise that reflected her brand identity and created a unique experience for fans.

Her music career allowed her to leverage her brand and promote her merch. Yet, her focus on the fan experience allowed her merch to stand out from other artists and turn a profit.

She does not have her team design a few t-shirts and leave it at that. Instead, Taylor curates several clothing collections per year to match up with album or song releases. Fans want her merch because they connect to the personalized details she includes, including specific song lyrics.

taylor swift online store

Swift’s collections usually include items such as crewneck sweaters, hoodies, t-shirts, jewelry, car decals, and temporary tattoos available for purchase on her online store.

She also releases limited clothing drops, adding to the exclusivity of owning Taylor merch. Her most recent Eras collection for her upcoming tour was only available for purchase for 72 hours.

Limited drops such as these create urgency among customers, generating sales and increasing the value of her merch after sales have ended. Taylor also collaborated with fashion designer Stella McCartney in 2019 for her Lovers album to create high-end and sustainable styles.

She makes sure to sell merch that connects strongly with her music and brand identity. While she collects some profit from merch sales during tours, she uses her online store throughout the year to generate the most revenue.

The Importance of Fulfillment Services

Taylor’s merch profits, in part, can be credited to her quick fulfillment service. After purchasing an item from her online store, fans are assured their purchase will arrive on time and as ordered. Taylor also has a strong customer service team available to address product and shipping concerns.

Fulfillment services help companies run their businesses more efficiently by providing warehousing, packaging, and shipping of products to customers.

Designing intriguing merch is one thing, but actually getting the merch to customers requires an effective process. Taylor ships worldwide to fans, so it is important she has a strong fulfillment service to back up her merch business.

Why Work with an Order Fulfillment Partner?

If you want to follow Taylor Swift’s business model, we cannot emphasize how important it is to get your fulfillment process in check.

If you dream of running a 7-figure apparel business one day, you won’t be able to pack and ship orders by hand forever.

You could hire an in-house team to help you, but that would bring a slew of challenges that you may not want to deal with.

One great alternative is to work with an expert fulfillment partner.

The right fulfillment service will bring value to your business. Here are a few of the benefits you can expect from working with an order fulfillment partner:

Scalability: You can scale operations up or down as needed. Fluctuations in demand won’t slow you down. You can say goodbye to many of the headaches that come with growing your business.

Improved efficiency: When you work with a partner, you won’t be investing any of your own time or resources to process and ship orders. Your time is valuable, and a fulfillment partner will save you a lot of it.

Inventory optimization: An order fulfillment partner will give you access to leading technology, expertise, and inventory management tools that will help your business run seamlessly. Your partner will help you integrate your sales channels with their fulfillment service so everything runs smoothly.

Cost savings: An order fulfillment partner can offer economies of scale and reduced shipping costs, helping you save money on order fulfillment. By lowering your operating costs, you can invest more money into other areas of your business.
