8 Factors to Consider When You Choose a T-Shirt Printing Company

Posted on

Contrary to the beliefs of some, ordering custom apparel is not like buying clothes at Walmart. When you order t-shirts with your artwork on them, you want your finished products to look like everything you’ve ever dreamed of—not like you took a $4 t-shirt and slapped a logo on it. As you’ve seen, there are a lot of t-shirt printing companies on the interwebs. Each one offers different services, benefits, and levels of quality. That being said, you don’t want to go with the first custom apparel company you see, and you definitely don’t want to go with the cheapest either. Finding a t-shirt printing company that consistently produces high-quality garments can be harder than it seems. With all of the t-shirt printers out there, how can you safeguard your order and make sure you’re getting exactly what you want?

You can lower your risk of disappointment by educating yourself on what to look for in a custom apparel partner.

After all, knowledge is power. Once you can identify the green flags, choosing a t-shirt printing company will be a breeze—we promise.

Here are 8 factors you should consider when choosing a t-shirt printing company:

1. The pricing structure

Once again, going with the cheapest option is a bad idea. You might think that saving a few bucks is worth the risk, but if it comes at the expense of the t-shirt quality, you will regret it.

Listen, if you’re balling on a budget, we get it. In that case, it’s definitely worth your while to understand more about the pricing structures of the custom apparel companies you’re considering.

For example, factors like:

Cost per shirt

This is the benchmark you’ll use to determine whether a company’s t-shirt prices are fair. When evaluating the cost per shirt, you should also consider how many t-shirts you’re ordering. The cost per shirt is especially important to keep in mind if you are ordering in bulk.

Price breaks

Many custom apparel companies (including us) will offer price breaks when you order a higher quantity of shirts.

Minimum order requirements

Some t-shirt printing companies have a minimum order requirement, while others don’t. This is something you’ll want to be aware of before you place your order.

Printing method

As a rule of thumb, direct-to-garment (DTG) printing is cheaper for low quantities of shirts. For bulk orders, screen printing is the more economical option.

The bottom line is that you should have a clear understanding of the t-shirt printing company’s pricing structure before you place your order. This will help ensure that there are no surprises when it’s time to pay the bill.

2. The printing methods offered

Not all t-shirt printing companies are created equal. In fact, some t-shirt printers only offer one printing method, while others offer a variety of options.

Screen printing and DTG are the two most popular t-shirt printing methods. DTG is best for photorealistic prints, while screen printing is better for more simplistic designs.

Here at Scrappy Apparel, we offer screen printing because it produces vibrant, durable prints and it is extremely cost-effective for bulk orders like we mentioned earlier.

You can read more about the pros and cons of each printing method in our recent blog, 5 Industry Secrets Other Apparel Printing Companies Won’t Tell You.

3. The quality of the finished products

This is probably the most important factor to consider when choosing a t-shirt printing company. After all, you want your t-shirts to look amazing, right?

There are many factors that determine the quality of a t-shirt printing company’s finished product, but here are a few prime examples:

The garment quality

Did you know that 95% of custom apparel horror stories begin with poorly made garments? (JK, we just made that statistic up—but in all seriousness, low-quality garments are bad news.)

The point is that you should always check the quality of the t-shirts before you place your order. A good t-shirt should be made of high-quality fabric that feels soft to the touch. It should also have a comfortable fit and be true to size.

Here’s a tip: Order samples from the t-shirt printing company you’re considering so you can check out the quality of the products before you place a bulk order.

order samples

The printing quality

In addition to the garment quality, you should also make sure that the custom apparel partner you choose can produce incredible prints. The ink should be applied evenly and there should be no gaps in the design. T-shirt printing is an art form, so make sure you choose a company that has a positive track record of producing WOW-worthy work.

The level of experience and expertise of the team

This is another important factor to consider when choosing a t-shirt printing company. You want to partner with a company that has a team of experts who are passionate about their craft. The last thing you want is to hire a team that doesn’t put any love into their work. After all, you believe your designs deserve all the love in the world, right?

4. The garment patterns, fabrics, and inks you’ll have access to

T-shirts are not one-size-fits-all. (And we’re not talking about shirt sizes, either.) Garment patterns are the shapes that t-shirts are cut into. They often vary by brand and t-shirt style.

For example, a men’s t-shirt pattern will be different than a women’s t-shirt pattern. And a long-sleeve t-shirt pattern will be different than a short-sleeve pattern.

The t-shirt printing company you choose should offer a variety of garment patterns so you can find the perfect fit for your needs.

In addition to garment patterns, t-shirt fabrics and inks also play a crucial role in the quality of the final product.

Scratchy, rough fabric is no bueno. And lackluster inks will make your t-shirt design look, well, flat.

The t-shirt printing company you choose should only use the highest quality fabrics and inks. This will ensure that your t-shirts are comfortable to wear and look great wash after wash.

Additionally, your custom apparel partner should share their expertise to help you make the right fabric and ink decisions for your project.

For example, discharge inks are a good option if you’re looking for a vintage t-shirt look. And water-based inks are an excellent choice if you’re looking for a soft, natural feel.

5. The vibe you get from the customer service team

We’ve said this before, and we’ll say it again:

Vibes don’t lie.

The team you work with should make you feel good.

Email responses should be prompt, clear, and helpful.

You should never feel like you’re being brushed off or that your questions are being dismissed.

You can tell a lot about a company by the professionalism of its customer service team. So if the vibes aren’t good, it’s time to look for love (meaning t-shirt printing services) somewhere else.

Our expert customer service team is friendly, professional, and knowledgeable. (Talk about a triple threat!)

With us on your side, you won’t have to worry about anything. We’ll answer your questions about every stage of the process—everything from pre-production to delivery.

Get in touch with us.

6. Turnaround time

Have a tight deadline? Then make sure to ask about turnaround time. T-shirt printing companies often have different turnaround times for different t-shirt styles.

Ask the t-shirt printing company how long it will take them to produce your order. And be sure to ask about their rush options if you need your t-shirts in a pinch.

At Scrappy Apparel, our turnaround times vary by service. However, we will say that if we had to face The Flash in a production race, we’d bet on our team.

7. Shipping logistics

Mama always said, “It’s not just about the destination, it’s about the journey.”

When it comes to t-shirt printing companies, this couldn’t be more true.

You want to partner with a company that will make the shipping process as smooth as possible. Let’s take a look at some important shipping factors to keep in mind:

Costs

Some t-shirt printing companies charge extra for shipping. We get it, but personally, we wouldn’t do it.

Moral of the story: don’t get nickeled and dimed by your t-shirt printing company. Choose a partner that offers free shipping.

(P.S. We offer free shipping to the USA for all custom apparel orders. You’re welcome.)

Tracking

When your t-shirts are shipped, you should receive a tracking number so you can keep an eye on their whereabouts. This will give you peace of mind and help you plan accordingly.

Packaging

Don’t let your order get ruined by a packaging disaster. Your shirts deserve to arrive safe and sound.

Choose a custom apparel partner that will take the time to package your t-shirts with care.

At Scrappy Apparel, we fold and polybag all orders so they are retail-ready and protected from the elements.

8. An ordering process that prioritizes your satisfaction and peace of mind

Disorganization is the enemy of success.

That’s why we have developed a proprietary system that streamlines the ordering process and guarantees your satisfaction.

Our Brand Building Process (BBP) is designed to bring your custom apparel vision to life. We eliminate the margin of error through an extensive pre-production review, so you know exactly what you’re getting before your order is fulfilled.

And it gets even better—you know exactly when you’ll get your order, too. You can say goodbye to delays, backorders, and broken promises. Your shirts will arrive at your doorstep on time, every single time.

You could say our BBP is your new BFF.

Should you choose Scrappy Apparel as your t-shirt printing company?

We think so. But if you still aren’t sure, let’s take a closer look at what our custom apparel services can do for you.

Here’s an evaluation of our services based on all the criteria we just went over:

1. Pricing structure

All our services have different minimum order quantities (MOQs), so the number of shirts you want will help determine which service is best for you. For example, sublimation has a much lower MOQ than screen printing.

Additionally, we offer price breaks on higher quantities of shirts. As the quantity goes up, the cost per shirt goes down. It’s pretty cool how that works, huh?

2. The printing methods offered

We currently offer screen printing, but not DTG printing. Therefore, our services are ideal if you are ordering in bulk and your design doesn’t have a million colors in it.

In case your design does have a million colors in it, we also offer sublimation printing. Oh, and BTW, that service has a much lower MOQ than screen printing. It’s the way to go if you have a lower quantity order.

3. The quality of the finished products

Quality is our middle name. When you work with us, you get the best of the best—no IFs, ANDs, or BUTs.

4. The garment patterns, fabrics, and inks you’ll have access to

We source garment patterns that you can private label, which is perfect if you have a clothing brand that you want to look super legit.

Our Peruvian Pima Cotton is the softest cotton in the world. If you don’t believe us, try it for yourself.

The inks we use are vibrant and soft to the touch. They’re luxurious without the luxury price tag.

5. The vibe you get from the customer service team

It doesn’t matter if you’re a new prospective customer or a loyal Scrappy Apparel fan. You’ll get the same 5-star service from our team.

So, don’t be shy. If you have a question for us, ask away!

6. Turnaround time

We are proud to say that our turnaround times are fully transparent and accurate. You can count on our deliveries to be on time or early—every single time.

7. Shipping logistics

We offer free shipping to the USA, and we fold and polybag all orders.

8. An ordering process that prioritizes your satisfaction and peace of mind

Our Brand Building Process (BBP) will save you time and energy. Instead of chasing around unresponsive customer service teams or worrying about where your order is, you can place full trust in our proven custom apparel process.

Just submit your project details, receive your quote, approve your pre-production layouts, and crack open a cold one while we handle the rest.

Our custom apparel experts are eager to begin working on your project.

If you’re ready to work with a company that is just as enthusiastic about your custom apparel order as you are, we’re the team for you.

Let’s get your project rocking and rolling.

summer all over print clothing trends

Get Inspired: Summer All Over Print Clothing Trends

Posted on

Do you have a statement to make?

Or maybe you have a design that is so great that you simply cannot resist printing it all over a garment?

Well, all over print clothing is a phenomenal way to show off your designs. You can print your artwork on t-shirts, hoodies, polos… you name it!

If you want to achieve this striking look for your own custom apparel, there are two key printing methods to consider:

All Over Sublimation Printing

Sublimation printing uses an advanced technique to print detailed images onto custom apparel. This printing method is perfect for all over print clothing because it produces a vibrant and durable print that will not crack, fade, or peel.

Sublimation works best on polyester fabrics. Polyester is a popular fabric choice because it is lightweight, breathable, and comfortable to wear (a.k.a. perfect for sweet summertime!)

Our minimum order quantity (MOQ) for All Over Sublimation Printing is 12 pieces. It’s the way to go if you don’t want to order 100 garments or more at a time.

All Over Screen Printing

Screen printing is our OG custom apparel technique. It works best on natural fibers like cotton. All over screen printing is a great option if you want to print all over your apparel with just a few colors.

Our minimum order quantity (MOQ) for All Over Screen Printing is 100 pieces.

So, what are the differences between All Over Sublimation Printing and All Over Screen Printing?

Here are the differentiators that will affect which printing method you should use for your custom apparel project:

The fabric you decide to use

If you want polyester, sublimation is the way to go. If you want cotton or other natural fibers, screen printing is the better option.

The number of colors in your design

Sublimation gives you free range to use as many colors as you want in your all over print clothing designs.

With screen printing, more colors = more expensive. We don’t want to discourage you from creating crazy rainbow designs, but it’s something to keep in mind!

How many garments you want

Since All Over Sublimation Printing has a MOQ of 12 pieces, it’s the best choice if you are planning to order a small batch of garments.

With these tips in mind, let’s look at some all over print clothing trends for summer:

floral prints

Floral prints

If April showers bring May flowers, what do May flowers bring?

Floral prints, of course!

This project from Emporium Pies was a blast to create. We printed an all over floral design onto polyester fabric with sublimation. The final product was stunning, and we loved how the colors popped against the fabric.

All over print floral shirts are a great way to show off your designs and get into the summer spirit.

But don’t limit yourself to palm fronds and hibiscus flowers—any type of flower will bring a vibrant touch to your design. Roses, daisies, and sunflowers all make for beautiful all over print clothing designs.

seamless patterns

Seamless patterns

Another all over print clothing trend that’s perfect for summer is seamless patterns.

This example from Proud Ninety makes a big splash. We love how the artwork contrasts the color of the garment.

Seamless patterns are repeating designs that can be tiled infinitely without any visible seams.

There are endless possibilities when it comes to designing a seamless pattern. You can use geometric shapes, florals, or even abstract designs.

If you want to create all over print artwork but don’t know where to start, a seamless pattern is a great option—and we have a free article on how to create one in Adobe Illustrator.

photorealistic artwork

Photorealistic artwork

If you want to get really creative with your all over print clothing designs, you can try photorealistic artwork. This example we created for SolidCAM looks legit.

Photorealistic all over prints are perfect for designs that are too detailed to screen print. They’re made for sublimation printing.

This printing method allows you to print all over your apparel with full color, lifelike designs.

You can use any type of image, as long as it has a high enough resolution.

polyester polo

The polo look

Did you know that polo and polyester are a match made in heaven?

Polos are in this summer (and let’s be real, they’re in every summer).

All over print polos are a wardrobe staple. They’re perfect for all your warm-weather activities, whether you’re hitting the links or just hanging out with friends.

This garment we created for Domino’s Pizza shows how you can use All Over Sublimation Printing to marry work attire with a casual, fun, and vibrant look.

camo hoodie

All over print hoodies

Hoodies aren’t just limited to the fall and winter months. On windy summer nights, hoodies come in clutch and look cool at the same time.

This example from our project with Passion Sports Camo shows what’s possible with a durable, yet breathable garment and a sports-inspired take on a classic print.

The power of sublimation + a 5-star print + a retail-soft garment = your new favorite hoodie. If you don’t believe us, we invite you to order samples of our garments to experience the quality for yourself.

line drawing illustrations

Line drawing illustrations

Line drawing illustrations are a great way to add some whimsy to your all over print design. This garment we created for The University of Illinois at Chicago combines subtle line art with bold, high-contrast letters.

Line illustrations are usually pretty simple, but they can be really effective. They can also be easily repeated to create a cohesive all over print clothing designs.

This summer, you can use line drawings to depict flowers, the ocean, or anything else that reminds you of warm weather and long hours of daylight.

Let’s bring your summery ideas to life.

At Scrappy Apparel, we have all the tools and resources you need to guide your custom apparel project from pre-production to delivery.

If you have a question, just ask. Our team can help you decide the best printing method, fabric, and ink for your custom apparel project.

Ready to begin your project? Let’s swing into summer with your dope designs!

12 Money-Saving Tips for T-Shirt Screen Printing

Posted on

We can read your mind. If you’re researching your options for t-shirt screen printing, we already know you’re thinking of ways you can save money on your order.

We love saving money too. (Who doesn’t?) But we also know that not all bargains are good. You don’t want to sacrifice quality just to save a few bucks.

So how do you find a happy medium? Whether you’re ordering shirts for your clothing brand or your team members, there are ways to impress your people without breaking the bank.

Today, we’re excited to share 12 ways you can save money on screen printing without ending up in a custom apparel fiasco.

1. Choose a trustworthy manufacturer and communicate openly with them.

You might be thinking, “DUH!”

But you shouldn’t overlook this tip. The custom apparel partner you work with will determine the quality of your finished products and the fees you pay to produce the apparel.

That’s why it’s important to choose a screen printing partner you can rely on. A trustworthy manufacturer will be transparent about their prices and any potential hidden costs.

Three words: vibes don’t lie.

In an initial meeting with a potential custom apparel partner, take note of their levels of professionalism and customer service. A manufacturer that communicates well and cares about your brand will likely become a valuable partner in the long run.

If they’re not responsive to your questions or seem more interested in making a quick sale than providing quality service, they might not be the right partner for you.

Remember, if you feel like they’re trying to take advantage of you, run the other way… FAST!

Take time to read your manufacturer’s policies and disclaimers.

It’s crucial to understand what you’re agreeing to when you sign a contract with your manufacturer.

Be sure to ask about minimum order requirements, turnaround times, and any additional fees that may apply to your order.

Share all the details of your project with your manufacturer so they can give you an accurate quote.

The more information you can give them, the better. Make sure you understand each step in the production process and the costs associated with each.

Be sure to ask about any other fees that may apply to your order, such as artwork setup fees or shipping charges.

FYI: We offer free shipping to the USA for all our orders.

Get a price quote upfront and avoid hidden costs.

When you’re trying to save money on screen printing, the last thing you want is to be surprised by hidden fees.

Be sure to ask your potential custom apparel partner for a price quote upfront. This way, you’ll know exactly how much your order will cost and you can avoid any unwanted surprises.

At Scrappy Apparel, we believe in 100% transparency. We never charge hidden fees. When it comes to estimates, what you see is what you get!

And did we mention our quotes are free? Grab your free quote.

Order samples to test a manufacturer’s product quality before placing your custom apparel order.

Samples will give you a good idea of the quality of a manufacturer’s products.

If you’re not happy with the quality of the samples, it’s probably not worth placing an order with that company.

But if you fall in love with your samples, you can be confident that you’re ordering from a reputable manufacturer that will make your custom apparel dreams come true.

Order samples of our screen printed products.

Get quotes from multiple manufacturers.

When you’re trying to save money, it’s important to compare prices.

Get quotes from multiple screen printing manufacturers and review them.

Be sure to compare apples to apples, though. Confirm that each quote is for the same type of shirt, number of colors, print size, etc.

And remember… cheaper is not always better!

2. Make choices that will save you time and energy.

After all, time is money.

You might be wondering what this has to do with custom apparel.

Well, when you’re trying to save money on screen printing, it’s important to make choices that will protect your time and energy.

Have you ever waited on hold with a customer service rep. for hours only to be told that your products are on backorder?

Yeah, we’ve been there too.

That’s why we’ve made it our mission to be different.

At Scrappy Apparel, we pride ourselves on our customer service and quick turnaround times.

We know that your time is valuable, so we make it our priority to get your order right the first time and deliver it to you fast.

Additionally, if you choose a custom apparel partner that has its processes down pat, you’ll be able to place your orders quickly and easily.

At Scrappy Apparel, our Brand Building Process (BBP) makes ordering screen printed shirts a piece of cake. All you have to do is submit your project details, approve your pre-production layouts, and chill. We’ll deliver your order to your doorstep with speed and accuracy like you’ve never seen before.

Our seamless processes and stellar customer service will save you time that you can use to grow your brand, and that will do more than just save you money—it will actually make you money!

3. Do not make decisions based on price alone.

We know this sounds counterintuitive. After all, you are reading this article to learn how to save money on your screen printing order, right?

Here’s the thing. If you go for the cheapest option in every decision you make for your custom apparel order, chances are you’ll end up with a product that isn’t exactly what you want.

If you don’t get what you want, you may end up spending more money later on re-orders.

While price is important, it shouldn’t be the only deciding factor when making choices for your screen printing project. Your mindset should be to get the greatest value from your order, not necessarily the lowest price.

4. Invest in top-quality products.

This tip may seem like a no-brainer, but it’s important to remember that when you’re trying to save money, you shouldn’t skimp on quality.

Investing in high-quality products may cost you a bit more upfront, but in the long run, it will save you money because you won’t have to replace your products as often.

And if you have your own custom apparel brand, product quality should be your top priority. Your customers will be wearing your shirts, so it’s your responsibility to ensure the products are made with care and attention to detail. You want your customers to recommend your brand to their friends, right?

Sacrificing quality will hurt your bottom line, not help it.

5. Focus on one or two unique designs at a time.

If you have a custom apparel brand, stocking an extensive inventory of designs can cost a lot of money upfront. Want to save some $$$? Focus on creating one or two apparel designs that you can sell repeatedly.

Sell limited edition items to make more sales with fewer designs.

Consider selling new designs as limited editions to create a sense of urgency and encourage people to buy your products before they’re gone forever!

Plus, selling limited edition items is a great way to boost sales without having to invest in new designs all the time.

Keep your corporate apparel simple.

If you are ordering custom t-shirts for your employees, give everyone the same exact shirt instead of creating unique designs for each department.

Not only will this save you money on the screen printing process, but it will also make ordering shirts simpler and less time-consuming.

order in bulk

6. Order in bulk, and check to see if your custom apparel partner offers price breaks for larger orders.

Usually, the more you order, the lower the price per shirt. (At least that’s how it works here at Scrappy Apparel.)

Be sure to ask about minimum order quantities (MOQs) before you commit to an order. Our MOQ for Retail Ready Screen Printing is only 50 shirts.

It’s better to order more shirts than you think you need the first time to avoid re-orders and additional fees.

7. Use fewer colors in your custom apparel.

The more colors you add to a design, the higher the price.

Don’t get us wrong—we love bright, vibrant designs. But if you want to add a pop of color while keeping costs low, choose a colorful shirt instead of adding multiple hues to the design itself.

If you want to keep your design simple, choose a one-color print.

A one-color print is a design that uses only one color of ink.

One-color prints are less expensive to produce than multi-color designs because they require fewer screens and less ink. This can actually make quite a statement, and it’s much more affordable than using all the colors in the rainbow.

Avoid designs with tiny, intricate details.

This tip goes hand-in-hand with the previous one.

The more details you have in your design, the more expensive it will be to produce.

To save money on screen printing, avoid designs that are too complex.

The minimalistic vibe is in right now, anyway.

Use negative space strategically as part of your design.

This is a great way to add interest to a design without adding unnecessary elements (and inflated screen printing costs).

Negative space is the empty space around and between the subjects of an image.

In the world of t-shirt design, using negative space can create some seriously cool effects—and it’s usually less expensive than adding more colors or details to a design.

Opt for a light-colored shirt.

Did you know that light-colored shirts are generally less expensive to produce than dark ones?

That’s because darker colors require more ink, which can end up costing you more money.

So if you’re looking to save money on your next order of custom t-shirts, consider choosing a light-colored shirt instead of a dark one.

8. Reduce the number of print locations.

If you want to add your custom design to the front AND back of a shirt, we can totally do that.

However, it will cost you more than printing your design in one location. The same goes for sleeve printing.

If you’re looking to reduce the cost of your screen printing order, consider limiting your design to one or two locations on the shirt instead of printing it all over.

9. Ask about the screen printing process and what type of inks will be used on your shirts.

Some inks are more expensive than others, so this is a good way to get an idea of what will affect the cost of your order.

At Scrappy Apparel, we use vibrant inks that produce long-lasting results, so you can be sure your custom t-shirts will look great wash after wash.

Our water-based inks are a great option if you’re looking for an eco-friendly printing method. They are less expensive than plastisol inks and produce a soft, comfortable print.

Alternatively, our plastisol inks are perfect for designs that require vibrant colors or need to withstand harsh conditions, like extreme heat or cold. Like we said, they do cost more than water-based inks, but they produce a durable print that will last for years.

If you’re not sure which type of ink is right for your custom t-shirt design, just ask! We would be more than happy to help you choose the best option for your needs.

10. Give your manufacturer plenty of time to turn around your order so you can avoid rush fees.

To avoid paying extra for your custom t-shirts, be sure to give your manufacturer plenty of time to produce your order.

They will likely charge a rush fee if you need your order fulfilled faster than their normal delivery times.

Our turnaround time for Retail Ready Screen Printing is 15 to 20 business days.

11. Ask if your manufacturer offers any special discounts.

At Scrappy Apparel, we offer discounts for active-duty military personnel, veterans, and nonprofits. Make sure to tell us if you qualify for one of those deals!

12. Sell your custom apparel.

This may seem like an obvious one, but it’s worth mentioning. If you sell your custom t-shirts, you can offset the cost of your order and maybe even make a profit.

You don’t even need to have a clothing brand to sell custom apparel. If you order screen printed t-shirts for your employees, you can buy extras and sell them at events or in your store.

If people love your brand, they’ll want to show their support by wearing your shirts!

5 Industry Secrets Other Apparel Printing Companies Won’t Tell You

Posted on

Don’t you hate it when you find out a secret and realize you’re the last one to know?

Like when your favorite artist announces a surprise concert in your city and the tickets sell out in under 2 minutes? Talk about FOMO.

It sucks to be left out, but don’t stress. When it comes to custom apparel, our mission is to keep everyone in the know. That’s the Scrappy way.

There are industry secrets that other apparel printing companies don’t want you to know, and today we’re going to share five of them.

Ready to take notes? Let’s dive in:

1. Quality matters more than price.

With screen printing, sublimation, cut and sew, or any custom apparel technique for that matter, quality should always be your top priority.

We know you want to save money whenever you can, but skimping on quality will only cost you more in the long run.

If you have a custom apparel brand, you should aim to create products that your customers will love and want to wear over and over again.

If you cut corners to save a few bucks, it’s only going to hurt your business in the long run.

Or let’s say you don’t have an apparel brand, but you need to order work shirts for 500 employees at your company. Guess what? Quality matters for you, too.

If you choose the lowest-priced products on the market, don’t be surprised when your team members complain about holes in their shirts, faded artwork, and unraveled embroidery.

Low-quality custom apparel will burn a hole in your pocket when you have to reorder shirts for your team multiple times per year. Don’t do that to yourself.

So, can you promise us you won’t order the cheapest products just because they’re the cheapest? Great, now we can move on to the next industry secret.

2. Choosing the right custom apparel partner is crucial.

When it comes to apparel printing companies, not all manufacturers are created equal.

In order to get the best possible product, you need to take the time to find a manufacturer that you can trust.

What should you look for in a custom apparel partner? Here are a few key qualities:

The ability to produce top-quality apparel

This one is pretty self-explanatory. You want a manufacturer that is capable of creating products that meet your high standards.

The apparel printing industry is constantly evolving, and the best manufacturers are always ahead of the curve. They invest in the latest technology and have a team of experts on staff who are ready to take on any challenge.

A strong understanding of your brand

If your manufacturer views your brand as a dollar sign and that’s it, you won’t get the same level of support and insight as you would from a manufacturer that’s truly invested in your project.

Genuine partnerships with apparel printing companies should feel like a two-way street. You should be able to rely on them for thoughtful feedback and strategic insights that can help you scale your brand.

A commitment to customer service

When you’re working with a custom apparel partner, you should feel like you’re their only client. They should be responsive to your needs and always available to answer your questions.

You should never feel like you’re being brushed off or that your concerns are falling on deaf ears.

With the right custom apparel experts, your project will be in good hands from start to finish.

3. You should choose a printing method based on your custom apparel goals.

Screen printing and direct-to-garment (DTG) printing are the two most popular printing methods for custom apparel. Although they are very different, both printing methods have their own distinct advantages.

Pros of screen printing

Screen printing is ideal for apparel brands that want to create vibrant, long-lasting products. Although the setup process takes a while, screen printing provides faster production for bulk orders than DTG does.

For bulk orders, screen printing is the most cost-effective option by far.

Cons of screen printing

Screen printing can be more expensive than DTG for smaller orders. If you’re ordering screen printed products, usually there will be a minimum order quantity (MOQ), which is not ideal if you only need one or two shirts.

At Scrappy Apparel, our MOQ for Retail Ready Screen Printing is 50 pieces.

Pros of DTG printing

DTG produces photorealistic prints. It is perfect for apparel brands that want to print complex designs or need fast turnaround times for a small number of products. With DTG, there are no minimum order requirements.

Additionally, DTG gets an A+ for sustainability since its inks are eco-friendly.

Cons of DTG printing

DTG is more expensive than screen printing for larger orders. DTG prints also don’t last as long as screen prints. If durability is one of your top priorities, screen printing will be the better option.

Why we offer screen printing at Scrappy Apparel

Many of our customers are focused on scaling their clothing brands or ordering custom apparel for their teams of 50 or more. Since screen printing is the way to go for larger orders, we set out to provide the best screen printing services in the industry.

4. For large orders, bulk manufacturing is a more cost-effective option than print-on-demand.

Many apparel brands choose print-on-demand (POD) for their custom apparel needs. POD is great for small orders, but it’s not the most cost-effective solution for large orders.

Bulk manufacturing (a.k.a. when custom apparel is produced in large quantities all at once) is a better option for apparel brands that want to order 500 units or more.

The biggest advantage of bulk manufacturing is that it’s more cost-effective than POD for large quantities. When you order in bulk, you’re able to take advantage of price breaks. The unit cost goes down as the quantity ordered goes up.

Our customers often come to us because they want to order a large number of shirts at the same level of quality they’d expect from a POD service. We’re able to provide our partners with top-of-the-line, bulk manufactured apparel at a fraction of the cost per unit.

5. You don’t have to sacrifice quality for speed.

Just because you need your custom apparel quickly doesn’t mean that you have to sacrifice quality. If anyone tells you otherwise, they are lying (or simply misguided).

It’s all about finding the right partner that is able to deliver the stunning, ultra-soft garments that you can be proud of.

At Scrappy Apparel, we pride ourselves on being able to provide our clients with both quality and speed. We understand that time is of the essence, so we don’t waste any of it.

We offer lightning-quick shipping times with expedited options available. Need a quick turnaround? Tell us when you need your order and we will let you know if we can meet your deadline.

Expert eCommerce Tips From the Best Custom T-Shirt Company

Posted on

Brick and mortar and eCommerce might be brothers, but when it comes to best practices, they’re often worlds apart. If you’ve been killing it in-store but find yourself struggling to take your business online, don’t stress.

Our team at Scrappy Apparel (a.k.a. the best custom t-shirt company in the world) is here to share 10 expert eCommerce tips that will help you demystify online sales and get those conversions rolling.

Let’s dive in:

1. Never, EVER skimp on product quality.

Obviously, new customers can’t hold your products in their hands or see them in person before they place an online order. However, that doesn’t mean you can get away with selling low-quality custom apparel.

A cheap product might make you a quick buck, but it will never create the long-term, sustainable results you are after.

It’s worthwhile to invest the time and money to source products that will check all the boxes for your customers. And guess what? Selling top-of-the-line products will make it easier to charge more for your custom apparel.

Yes, some customers do base their purchase decisions solely on price. But if you focus on quality, you will attract a different type of customer: the kind that is willing to pay a bit more for a product they know is worth it.

High-quality products have a way of selling themselves. We love this quote from Seth Godin (a.k.a. one of the coolest entrepreneurs of all time):

“The reason it seems that price is all your customers care about is that you haven’t given them anything else to care about.”

seth godin

#TRUTH: With quality products and a well-positioned brand, you can charge whatever you want for your custom apparel.

Don’t know how to find the best materials and products? At Scrappy Apparel, we do all the legwork for you. We continuously source cutting-edge garment patterns that your brand can private label. When you work with us, you’ll never worry about product quality because you know you’re getting the best of the best.

That’s one of the many reasons why we are the best custom t-shirt company the industry has ever seen. After you work with us, we think you will agree.

2. Set up your website for search engine optimization (SEO) success.

Although SEO is a slow-burn strategy that takes time to build momentum, it is well worth your patience and investment. With a rockin’ SEO strategy, you can attract organic web traffic and conversions from search engine results.

How awesome would it be to sit back and relax while the sales roll in passively? With the right SEO strategy, you can make your passive income dreams come true.

There are two fundamental types of SEO tactics: on-page and off-page.

On-page SEO refers to the elements on your website that you can control, like title tags, meta descriptions, header tags, and image alt tags. Optimizing your site for on-page SEO will help search engines “crawl” and index your site more easily.

Off-page SEO, on the other hand, focuses on external factors like link building and social signals. Strategies like guest blogging, outreach, and digital PR can improve the authority of your site in the eyes of Google’s algorithm. (As we know, it’s important to keep the algorithm happy.)

Both on-page and off-page SEO tactics are important for driving traffic to your website and boosting your search engine rankings.

3. Find a shipping solution that will deliver your products at warp speed.

No one likes to wait for their custom apparel to arrive. In today’s fast-paced world, customers expect (and deserve) speedy shipping.

The best way to ensure quick turnaround times is to find a shipping solution that integrates with your eCommerce platform. This will automate the shipping process and make it easier to keep track of your inventory.

In the wise words of Graham Charlton from ClickZ Global, “Retailers should never underestimate the ‘want it now’ mentality. If customers know that they will receive goods quickly when they order, they’ll keep coming back.”

ClickZ Global

4. Offer free shipping (because everybody loves FREE!)

Free shipping is one of the best ways to entice customers to make a purchase.

But isn’t offering free shipping the same as lowering the prices of your products? Not really.

Here’s the trick: you can choose to offer free shipping only under certain conditions. For example, your promotion could be “Free shipping for all orders of $50 or more.”

That’s a win-win for everyone because your customers will get the free shipping option they crave, and you can increase the average order value (AOV) of your online store.

If you’re not already offering free shipping, then it’s time to start. A free shipping option is an essential part of any eCommerce business’s marketing strategy—and we can attest to that because it works for us.

We offer free ground shipping throughout the USA, and our customers love us for it!

5. Build a positive reputation for your company by prioritizing customer satisfaction.

This is a no-brainer. Regardless of the type of company you run, your customers should come first.

However, as an eCommerce merchant, it’s crucial to put your customer-centric policies at the forefront of your business and show that you truly care.

Your customers need to experience and understand your brand’s commitment to their satisfaction. If your customers do not feel valued, they won’t feel compelled to buy. It’s that simple.

Ready to show your customers some extra love? Here are a few tips to help you:

Make the return process as easy as possible.

Have you ever tried to navigate a return process with endless provisions, terms, and complications? As a customer, it’s one of the worst experiences you can go through.

You can set yourself apart from other companies by offering easy returns to keep your buyers happy. Of course, no one likes returns, but the return process influences customer satisfaction tremendously.

Enable customer reviews on your website.

We could all use more social proof, right? Positive reviews from customers will show that your company delivers on its promises. Your brand will appear transparent and honest to potential buyers.

In the eCommerce space, reviews and testimonials are paramount—so if you have some great feedback to share, post it everywhere!

(Hint: you get bonus points if you can acquire video testimonials from your customers. Videos appear organic and trustworthy.)

Monitor and respond to reviews on external platforms.

Positive Google Reviews will help you appear more legitimate to your potential customers.

Take the time to respond to both positive and negative reviews. We know the negative reviews suck, but they are inevitable as your brand scales. The good news is that you can use them as an opportunity to demonstrate your commitment to customer satisfaction.

When responding to a negative review, do so in a positive light. You’ll want to show that you’re always available to resolve any issues that arise.

Acknowledge the reviewer, apologize for their bad experience, and tell them what you’re doing to resolve the issue.

Don’t get defensive—no one likes a company that can’t take responsibility for its mistakes. If you place the blame on the customer, the review will reflect even more negatively on your brand.

6. Supercharge your social media strategy with content that stands out.

We don’t know who made up the rumor that “social media is dead,” but that is far from the truth.

Sure, our favorite social platforms have changed tremendously over the years—some for the better, and others for the worse—but as long as people are glued to their phones all day, there will be opportunities for brands to make money on social media.

Here’s how to become a social media whiz:

Give your content a little extra TLC.

Create organic content that is shareable and interesting. No one wants to see another boring ad—especially not on social media.

Instead, focus on creating content that is creative, funny, or educational. If you can make people laugh or pause to think, you’re more likely to get their attention.

And BTW, you can’t avoid creating video content in 2022. (Sorry to all the introverted CEOs out there!)

Video is one of the effective ways to connect with your audience on a personal level. Your audience wants to see the human behind your brand, so don’t hesitate to show your smiling face.

Highlight a special offer and add a call-to-action (CTA) in your social media bio.

As an eCommerce business, your goal is to get people off of social media and onto your website so they can purchase your products.

Make it easy for your social media followers to find your website by adding a link to your bio. Above the link, mention your latest promotion and add a strong CTA so your followers and profile visitors will feel more compelled to click through and enter your custom apparel world.

Here’s an example of what a conversion-focused social media bio could look like:

7. Make sure your website is mobile-friendly.

In today’s world, more and more people are using their smartphones to browse the internet.

In fact, over half of all web traffic comes from mobile devices.

So, if your website isn’t mobile-friendly, you’re missing out on a lot of potential customers.

Here are a few ways to ensure your site is mobile-friendly:

  1. Implement a responsive design.
  2. Use large, easy-to-read fonts.
  3. Add large buttons and plenty of white space to your content.
  4. Optimize your images so they load quickly on mobile.
  5. Choose a fast and reliable hosting provider.

8. Use an abandoned cart email marketing strategy to automatically follow up with customers who left items in their carts.

If you’re not already using an abandoned cart email strategy, now is the time to start.

An abandoned cart email is a series of automated emails that are sent to customers who have added items to their online shopping cart but have not completed the purchase.

The goal of an abandoned cart email is to remind the customer about the items they were interested in and encourage them to complete their purchase.

Abandoned cart emails are an effective way to boost sales and increase customer loyalty.

Some eCommerce platforms have abandoned cart emails built-in. (Thank you, Shopify!) However, others may require you to put your tech guru hat on and configure the emails manually.

9. Create a sense of urgency with limited-time offers.

When the clock is ticking, your customers will feel more compelled to act quickly to make a purchase.

Urgency marketing campaigns well because they create FOMO. Customers don’t want to miss out on the incredible deal you’re offering them.

Here are some of our expert tips for incorporating urgency into your eCommerce marketing strategy:

Use countdown timers on your website and emails.

Who knew a cute little timer could be such a powerful moneymaker? It will let customers know how much time they have left to take advantage of a special offer. When you pair the timer with email marketing, digital ads, and other conversion-focused strategies, you can give your sales a serious boost.

Incorporate urgency into your email subject lines.

Make it clear in the subject line that time is running out. This will entice customers to open your email so they can see what the deal is.

Remember, subject lines are incredibly important because your customers will never see a single word of your beautifully written email unless your subject line is intriguing enough for them to click on. No pressure!

Tell your customers how many items are left in stock.

Do you sell limited edition items? If so, this is your breadwinning strategy.

Letting your customers know how many items are left in stock will create a sense of urgency and encourage them to make a purchase before it’s too late.

You can include urgency-focused messaging on your website, in your emails, or even on social media.

10. Consistently promote your bestselling products. Focus on cross-selling or upselling all your other items.

Your bestsellers are the MVPs of your brand. They’re the ones that are well-known, well-loved, and always in demand.

To keep the sales coming, you need to promote your bestsellers on a regular basis. This will ensure that your customers are always aware of your most popular products and will be more likely to purchase them.

While your bestsellers keep the orders coming in, make sure to focus on upselling your other products. Through the magic of upselling, you can increase your average order value (AOV) and make more sales.

Here are a few eCommerce upselling strategies that will work wonders for your brand:

Offer a product bundle at a discounted price.

When customers purchase bundles, they often feel like they’re getting more bang for their buck.  This is a great way to increase your AOV and clear out any slow-moving inventory.

Recommend products that complement the item in the customer’s cart.

You know that ultra-cool t-shirt design you just launched? You might just have the perfect hat to go with it.

Try offering discounted upsells on the checkout page. Customers love the feeling of getting an amazing deal, so they’ll be more likely to add the upsell to their cart if you give them a little encouragement (in the form of a discount).

Feature related items on each product page.

Your checkout page isn’t the only prime real estate to host your upselling strategy. Adding a “Related products” or “You might also love” section to each product page will keep your customers on your website for longer, and they will be more likely to discover new items to add to their carts.

Congratulations, you can now call yourself an eCommerce guru.  Just remember to put these tips into practice and you’ll be on your way to driving more sales and growing your business.

4 Steps to Order Custom Screen Print Shirts for Your Apparel Brand

Posted on

Custom apparel is a phenomenal brand-building tool—whether you’re just starting out or you’ve been in the game for a while.

However, with a sea of information and resources on the interwebs, it can be tricky to know where to start.

Feeling lost? Don’t stress—we’ll be your guide. Here are 4 steps to ordering custom screen print shirts for your apparel brand:

1. Choose the right custom apparel partner.

If you want to avoid delays and t-shirt horror stories, make sure you carefully consider which company to work with.

So, what do you look for in a partner? No, not the romantic kind… but to be real, the right custom apparel partner will make you fall in love with their products and services.

A 5-star custom apparel company will…

1. Have an organized, seamless process that gives you peace of mind and exceeds your expectations.

You already have enough on your plate. You shouldn’t have to worry about late deliveries, misprints, or miscommunications. Unfortunately, these mistakes are often the result of disorganized processes.

We have our screen printing and fulfillment workflows down pat. Our Brand Building Process (BBP) is the best in the industry. With our BBP, we can guarantee that your order will arrive on time (or early) and look exactly how you imagined it would.

2. Offer an array of custom apparel products and services.

Options, please! Your creativity has no limits, so choose a custom apparel partner that can bring your innovative ideas to fruition.

3. Provide full transparency and never charge hidden fees.

We can’t believe there are still companies in the world that charge tons of unnecessary fees in an attempt to make more money. It’s not cool.

We always provide upfront, all-inclusive estimates so our customers know what to expect. That’s how we do business—we value transparency and integrity in every situation.

4. “WOW” you with a team of rockstar customer support reps.

You’re not just a number to us. From your very first phone call or email, our team of specialists will treat you like family and help you every step of the way, from design to delivery.

2. Choose your shirt and ink type.

There are a lot of options out there. It can feel overwhelming if you don’t know what to look for. Here are a few factors to consider:

Fabric

You can call us the fabric gurus. We offer a variety of options to our customers, including our Peruvian Pima Cotton—which redefines the word “soft,” by the way. You deserve only the best materials for your custom apparel. That’s we offer the softest cotton in the world for our screen printing projects.

Shirt style

Are you going for casual or semi-professional? Playful or serious? The vibe you’re going for will affect the style of shirt you choose.

Once you’ve chosen the general style of shirt you’re going for, you can start thinking about more specific details. What kind of neckline do you want? What kind of sleeves? What kind of fit?

It’s a good idea to decide on the shirt type before you begin designing your artwork to ensure your product will be a solid match for the design.

View samples of our products.

Shirt color

The color of your shirt will affect the appearance of your design. It’s important to pick a shirt that will create contrast with the colors in your design so your artwork can stand out.

Type of ink

Don’t forget about the ink! It’s crucial to choose an ink that will produce vibrant and durable results with the fabric and color of your shirt.

Are you struggling to make the right decisions for your custom apparel project?

Ask our team or check out our blog on 10 Things You Should Know Before You Get a Shirt Screen Printed.

3. Prepare your design files.

This is where you get to be creative! We recommend collaborating with your team or hiring a designer to bring your custom apparel vision to life.

If you’re designing the shirts yourself, make sure you’re using vector files (AI or EPS) so we can produce high-quality prints of your artwork. Avoid raster-based file types (Ex. JPEG, PNG, or GIF) since they will not produce as crisp of a print.

4. Request your quote and enjoy the ease of our Brand Building Process (BBP).

If done-for-you sounds like the dream, you’ll love our BBP.

We take care of everything from start to finish, so you can sit back, relax, and wait for your custom screen print shirts to arrive at your door.

We are revolutionizing the custom apparel industry by providing a proven, structured process for ordering t-shirts online.

You can leave your Advil in the cabinet because our BBP is headache-free. It’s simple, straightforward, and results-driven (a.k.a. sent straight from heaven).

Here’s an overview of our BBP:

2. Connect with your Scrappy Sales Rep

3. Approve your pre-production layout(s)

This is the ultra-important part where we make sure everything is correct. We’ll confirm your print size, location, private labeling, etc. so we get everything right in the production stage.

4. Hang out and wait for your shirts to arrive!

10 Things You Should Know Before You Get a Shirt Screen Printed

Posted on

Screen printing is an art form. Over 1,000 years ago, screen printing began in China as a way to print patterns on fabric. (What a #throwback!)

Technology is a little more advanced these days, but let’s be real—your design deserves to be treated with the same level of care the Chinese took when they screen printed artwork by hand.

That’s why it’s so important to work with a custom apparel partner that can offer you the pristine quality you expect. Knowledgeable experts will guide you in the right direction as you make decisions for your custom apparel project.

Even though the right custom apparel partner will help you every step of the way, it’s still a good idea to learn about screen printing so you know what to expect when you place your order.

We’re here to help you out with a mini-guide on what the screen printing process looks like in 2022. (Don’t worry, we’ve updated our information many times since the Song Dynasty.)

Keep reading for 10 things you should know before you get a shirt screen printed:

1. Start with the basics: the fabric, design, and shirt color.

Although these are preliminary factors to consider in every custom apparel order, the decisions aren’t always clear-cut.

Why? Because the color of the shirt, ink color, and fabric type all have different attributes that will affect the outcome of the finished products.

It’s crucial to make strategic fabric, ink, and color choices to achieve impeccable results with screen printing.

First, let’s talk fabric. Here are the fabrics you can use for screen printing.

The most common fabrics for t-shirt printing are 100% cotton, a 50/50 cotton/polyester blend, and 100% polyester.

Here’s a closer look at each type:

Why choose a 100% cotton shirt?

Cotton is a natural fiber that is comfortable to wear, breathes well, and is easy to care for. It’s also one of the most popular choices for screen printing because the fabric takes the ink well.

Want that worn-in look? Cotton marries well with discharge ink, which can be used to create soft printed shirts that have a vintage look and feel.

Additionally, cotton is hypoallergenic, so it’s a good choice for everyone, including people with sensitive skin.

We use Peruvian Pima Cotton (a.k.a. the softest cotton in the world) for many of our garments. It’s dangerous. Once you get your hands on this fabric, you’ll be hooked.

Why choose a 100% polyester shirt?

Polyester is a manmade fiber that is durable, wrinkle-resistant, and easy to care for.

It’s a popular choice for athletes and teams because it can withstand repeated washings and still look great. It’s also lightweight and wearable, which makes it perfect for activewear.

Polyester is also an excellent choice for printing because it doesn’t absorb ink as much as cotton, so the colors are brighter and more vibrant.

Why choose a 50/50 cotton/polyester blend shirt?

You get the best of both worlds with a 50/50 blend. Blended shirts are breathable and comfortable like cotton, but also durable and easy to care for like polyester. Want a shirt that will hold up to repeated wear and washings? A 50/50 blend could be for you.

How to get a design for your screen printing project

This is one of the most important parts of getting a shirt screen printed. (Obviously, you’d end up with a blank shirt if there’s no design to print on it.)

Create a design you love or hire a designer to bring your vision to life. Choose artwork that represents your brand well.

If you design the art yourself, we recommend creating it in Adobe Illustrator or a similar program. Your final artwork will need to be in vector format, not raster format. (Hint: Photoshop is a raster program, and that’s why we don’t recommend it for preparing your final artwork files.)

If you choose to work with a designer on your t-shirt artwork, ask for a few quotes before you decide which person to hire. Be sure to get the quote in writing so there are no surprises later on.

Choosing shirt and ink colors

Keep in mind that light shirt colors tend to show ink darker than they actually are, while dark colors can make light-colored inks appear washed out.

CMYK printing is limited to a set color palette, so your design choices will be more limited. However, if you have a specific color in mind, we can often get close to your desired color with a CMYK print.

On the other hand, Pantone (or spot) color printing gives you more leeway in terms of color choices. With this method, we can print custom colors by mixing Pantone inks. This is a great option if you have a brand with specific colors that need to be used in your design.

The number of colors in your design will affect both the price and the complexity of your screen printing project. Simple designs with one or two colors are generally less expensive, while more complex designs with multiple colors may cost more.

Consider the purpose of your shirts when choosing colors.

Are you trying to make a statement? Create a feeling of unity? Stand out from the crowd? Your shirt’s colors should reflect your goals.

We recommend learning more about color theory to help you choose the perfect hues for your design.

2. Decide which type of ink you want to use.

Ink is a key player in upping your custom apparel game. It affects both the look and feel of your finished garment.

There are three primary inks used for screen printing shirts: plastisol, water-based and discharge.

What is plastisol ink?

Plastisol is the most common type of ink used for shirt printing.

It is made of PVC particles that are suspended in a plasticizer. The ink will not dry until it is exposed to high temperatures. This type of ink can be printed on any color shirt. However, it looks best on dark garments, and it is perfect for detailed designs.

Fun fact: the chemistry of plastisol ink is much different than water-based or discharge ink. Instead of sinking into the fabric, plastisol ink sits on top of the garment.

What is water-based ink?

Water-based inks are made of pigment and water. They dry by evaporation, and they’re best used on natural fabrics (like cotton). They are usually thinner than plastisol inks and result in a softer print on the shirt. Water-based inks can only be printed on light-colored garments, and they will not show up vividly on dark shirts.

What is discharge ink?

Discharge inks are used to print on dark garments and work by removing the color of the shirt where the design is printed, leaving only the ink color. This results in a very soft print that feels like it is part of the garment.

Feel overwhelmed by the ink options? Don’t sweat it. That’s what we’re here for!

Reach out to our team and we will be happy to help you decide which type of ink will work best for your custom apparel.

3. Decide if you want any embellishments or effects applied to your finished shirts.

Over the years, the traditional screen printing process has expanded to include a variety of effects that can make your shirts stand out.

At Scrappy Apparel, we give our customers lots of options for cool screen printing effects:

  • Foil
  • Glow in the dark
  • Liquid gold and silver
  • Puff
  • Reflective
  • Burnout

Let’s take your t-shirts to the next level.

4. Choose the right printing method for your project.

There are two primary methods of screen printing shirts: direct-to-garment (DTG) printing and traditional screen printing.

Direct-to-garment (DTG) printing

DTG printing is a technology that allows for digital designs to be printed directly onto garments.

DTG is actually more expensive than traditional screen printing, but that doesn’t mean it provides better results. DTG is an inferior printing method that results in lower quality finished products (and we don’t want that!)

We only offer our customers the best services, so that’s why we steer clear of DTG at Scrappy Apparel.

Traditional screen printing

Traditional screen printing is the more common method of printing shirts. It involves creating a stencil of your design and using that stencil to apply ink to the garment.

This method is less expensive than DTG printing, and it is best suited for larger orders. If you want your custom apparel to look retail-ready, traditional screen printing is the way to go.

5. Decide how many shirts you want printed.

The number of shirts you need will affect the price of your screen printing project.

We offer a minimum order quantity (MOQ) of 50 pieces, which is lower than many of our competitors. We also offer price breaks, so you can save on the cost per shirt if you need a large quantity.

Always ask for a quote before you place an order.

The cost of screen printing can vary depending on the number of shirts you’re ordering, the embellishments you’re adding, etc.

Be sure to ask for an estimate in advance so you are aware of the investment. We quote our customers at the beginning of the pre-production process.

At Scrappy Apparel, we believe in full transparency without any hidden fees or surprises. You can count on us!

6. Know which file format to save your artwork in.

Our preferred file format is vector EPS.

It’s important to save your file as a vector before you submit it for printing. Vector files are made up of mathematical curves and can be scaled to any size without losing quality. This is important because screen printing requires your design to scale to a large size.

We offer design services to help you with converting files and optimizing your artwork before printing. Let us know if we can assist you!

7. Make sure your design is the correct size for printing.

Most companies will be able to print designs in one of two sizes: 12″ x 16″ or 9″ x 12″. That’s great, but there’s nothing wrong with wanting your design to look bigger and better.

We offer large format screen printing so our customers can make a bold statement with their custom apparel.

We offer four tiers of large format screen printing:

  • 16″ x 20″
  • 17″ x 22″
  • 20″ x 28″
  • Entire garment

Our team of custom apparel experts can help you decide which size is best for your project. Don’t be afraid to ask any questions you have.

8. Review your design carefully before submitting it for production.

Once your design is finalized, be sure to proofread it carefully for any mistakes. We know how important it is to get your order right the first time, so our team works diligently to ensure the accuracy of each order.

At Scrappy Apparel, we create precise pre-production layouts for our customers to review to ensure the design, text, placement, and details are correct.

pre-production layouts

Our Brand Building Process (BBP) eliminates the margin of error and ensures that there aren’t any mistakes in the production process. That is one of the perks you get when you choose us to be your custom apparel partner!

9. Ask about turnaround time and shipping options.

We know how important it is to receive your order on time, especially if you have an event or deadline approaching.

For screen printing, our turnaround time is 15 to 20 business days. However, we may be able to give you a faster turnaround time if you’re in a rush.

Don’t be afraid to ask—we will be honest with you about how fast we can fulfill your order.

10. Decide whether you want to private label your garments.

Cut and Sew T-Shirts: Take Creative Control of Your Custom Apparel

Posted on

Your million-dollar apparel design deserves to be treated like royalty.

Our cut and sew services are what dreams are made of. If you’re looking for a custom apparel partner that offers you more artistic freedom, we’re the people to talk to.

When you work with us, we’ll offer you full creative control of your apparel designs. You can trust us to bring your one-of-a-kind vision to life.

How does cut and sew work?

Cut and sew is a design process in which you print a garment before it is manufactured. This might sound backwards, but it actually gives you more customization options.

The cut and sew process begins when you request a quote and send us your vector artwork. We’ll produce your garment from scratch based on the information we gather in the pre-production phase.

Finally, we’ll deliver your cut and sew apparel and “WOW” you with the results.

Is cut and sew right for your project?

Only you can decide, but we’ll share our expert advice to make your choice easier. Let’s take a look at the advantages and disadvantages of the cut and sew approach:

What are the benefits of cut and sew?

You have creative control over your garment patterns.

Cut and sew is exactly what it sounds like. Your custom apparel will be created from “raw” fabric instead of being printed on a ready-made shirt. Alternatively, cut and sew can mean modifying an existing garment to add new details, like pockets.

With cut and sew, your imagination is the limit—and that’s why it’s one of our most popular services for brands that want to make a splash with their innovative ideas.

Cut and sew garments stand out from the pack.

With cut and sew, you’re creating a product that is unique to you and your brand. This will help you stand out from the competition, which is essential in today’s crowded marketplace.

Plus, cut and sew garments tend to be higher quality than printed apparel. Since cut and sew is a more labor-intensive process, you can be sure that your custom apparel will last longer and look better than printed shirts.

You can charge more for cut and sew apparel.

If you create a unique product through our cut and sew process, you may be able to charge a premium price and generate higher profits from your custom apparel. People are often willing to pay more for a product that is truly different and innovative.

You have the best cut and sew professionals right in front of you.

When you begin any cut and sew project, you want to make sure you have people who know what they’re doing on your team. With Scrappy Apparel, you’re in good hands. Our cut and sew professionals have years of experience and have worked with some big names. We’re confident we can bring your ideas to fruition.

What are the disadvantages of cut and sew?

The production process for cut and sew clothing is more complex and time-consuming than the process for ready-made garments, so it generally costs more.

If you’re working with a tight budget, there may be better options for you than cut and sew. However, if you’re willing to invest in a completely customized product, cut and sew is the way to go.

It takes longer to create cut and sew garments.

Our cut and sew process is designed to eliminate the margin of error and ensure your completed garments look exactly as you imagined they would.

Since each cut and sew garment is created from scratch, it takes more time to create the custom apparel from start to finish. If you need your garments ASAP, cut and sew might not be the right choice for you.

The process might be called cut and sew, but you absolutely cannot cut any corners with it.

Cut and sew is a delicate technique that requires an expert touch. If you cut corners, the quality and appearance of your apparel will suffer. That’s why it’s so crucial to choose a custom apparel partner that can go above and beyond your expectations. Think of your cut and sew project as an investment, not a cost.

So, what’s the verdict?

If you’re looking for creative control, pristine quality, and made-from-scratch custom apparel, cut and sew could be the right choice for you. Let’s talk!

Sublimation printing is a popular technique to use with cut and sew manufacturing.

These custom apparel approaches are best friends. Here’s why:

First, let’s recap what all-over sublimation printing is:

Sublimation is a popular printing technique to use with cut and sew manufacturing because it allows for full-color designs that reach from one end of the garment to the other.

It’s also a great way to print complex graphics or photos onto fabric. The sublimation process uses heat to transfer dye onto the fabric, so the design becomes a part of the garment. This results in a luxurious, long-lasting print that won’t crack or fade over time.

How cut and sew sublimation works

In this service, the all-over sublimation process is similar to the traditional production method, but we complete the printing of the garment before it is assembled.

The cut and sew process eliminates the potential for any blurring, creasing, or smudging. You can also choose to keep certain parts of the garment solid, separating those sections from the sublimated parts.

Want pockets, embroidered areas, or other decorations? We have you covered with cut and sew sublimation.

Limits are meant to be broken.

Most online custom apparel companies will not give you much creative control over your finished products.

Why choose a custom apparel partner that will keep your creativity inside the box? When you work with Scrappy Apparel, you can rest assured that your cut and sew project will be handled with the utmost care and attention to detail.

We’re here to take your brand to the next level.

How IDONTMIND Uses Apparel to Start Conversations About Mental Health

Posted on

It’s the beginning of Mental Health Awareness Month, and we would like to take the opportunity to feature IDONTMIND, one of our incredible customers.

IDONTMIND is a campaign created by Mental Health America to inspire open conversations about mental health, which is often overlooked and under-discussed in our society. It surely deserves more attention than it receives.

Mental Health Awareness Month provides an opportunity for people to learn more about mental health, start conversations about mental health, and provide support for those who may be struggling. It is a time to come together and show that we are here for one another, regardless of what our mental health status may be.

In honor of Mental Health Awareness month, we are ecstatic to share an interview with Eddie, Co-Founder of IDONTMIND:

Q: Hey, Eddie! Thanks for taking the time to talk to us about IDONTMIND. What sparked the idea for the campaign?

Eddie: IDONTMIND is the start of a sentence that leads to a larger conversation about mental health – like IDONTMIND talking about my mental health, IDONTMIND going to therapy, IDONTMIND asking how you’re really doing.

IDONTMIND was started to inspire conversations about mental health. Simply put, we want to make talking about it a normal part of everyday life.

Q: We understand that IDONTMIND’s mission is to defeat the stigma around mental illness by inspiring conversations. How does the custom apparel contribute to your cause?

Eddie: People talk about what they’re wearing more than how they’re feeling, so we use that to our advantage. The phrase IDONTMIND on a shirt often prompts a lot of questions, and that’s by design. We want to make it easy to have those conversations with friends, family, and even strangers.

In addition to that, we like to think of wearing IDONTMIND as a suit of armor. It’s a dose of confidence you can take with you throughout the day, through the good ones and the bad ones.

Q: Mental Health America has a variety of programs and initiatives that fulfill its mission. How does IDONTMIND fit into the mix?

Eddie: We’re so lucky to be an official program of Mental Health America. They’ve been advocating for people living with mental health conditions for over 100 years. There’s so much knowledge and experience there that’s been vital to us as we’ve grown.

We see IDONTMIND as an on-ramp to the world of mental health. Maybe you meet us and it’s the first time you’ve thought about mental health. Maybe that’s through our IDONTMIND Journal, a collection of informative articles and personal stories. Maybe it’s through our Instagram (@idontmind) where you can find daily inspiration for your mental health journey. Or maybe it’s because you told your friend you like their shirt and asked them what it means.

Q: It’s amazing that IDONTMIND has raised over $500,000 for mental health organizations since its launch in 2017. How did you inspire people to support the campaign?

Eddie: Our IDONTMIND community is incredible. And from the very start, people related very much to our message and mission. People love to inspire conversations about mental health while wearing IDONTMIND. And 100% of our proceeds support IDONTMIND and Mental Health America. That helps us build our programs like the IDONTMIND Journal, Writing Workshop, Ask a Therapist series, free mental health screening, and much more.

Q: Do you think custom apparel has been a helpful community-building tool for IDONTMIND? If so, how?

Eddie: It’s been an incredible tool for us and a huge part of our identity. Apparel is a natural conversation starter, and it affects the way we feel about ourselves.

Q: Many of your apparel designs are minimalistic. Do you think that style helps your message to stand out more?

Eddie: Both me and IDONTMIND founder Chris Wood naturally gravitate towards minimalist and understated design. And we knew we wanted to build a brand that looked different from other mental health apparel and that could easily fit into your daily wardrobe. At first glance, you might not even know an IDONTMIND tee is related to mental health. It’s all about the natural conversation that it inspires.

Q: Do you collaborate with creative members of your community to produce the apparel designs for your online store?

Eddie: Chris and I create the majority of the designs, but it’s been really special to work with our community to branch out and tell their own stories through design. We’re currently working on a collaboration with musician Andy Grammer that I can’t wait for everyone to see. He’s been writing amazing music inspired by his recent mental health journey that’s really inspiring.

Q: How can our readers get involved in the IDONTMIND movement?

Eddie: We have a phrase we like to say: Wear it like you mean it. I would love for everyone to wear IDONTMIND and let it be part of your mental health journey. Whether that’s giving you an extra boost of confidence to greet a tough day, or wearing it to a family dinner to help you start a new conversation you’re ready to have.

There are many more ways too. Follow us on Instagram and share our posts to promote mental health awareness. Join us for our events and classes like Run IDONTMIND and the IDONTMIND Writing Workshop. And learn more about your mind on the IDONTMIND Journal.

Q: How did you first hear about Scrappy Apparel?

Eddie: Your Google Ads really worked. We were looking for a larger printer to scale with us, and I think you were one of my first calls.

Q: Why did you decide to work with us?

Eddie: I look for people who are easy to work with and truly understand our mission. Scrappy has been amazing and supported us by offering a nonprofit discount since the beginning.

Q: What is your favorite part about working with Scrappy Apparel?

Eddie: Communication is excellent. And I can always trust Scrappy will get the job done right. That gives me more time to focus on our other resources at IDONTMIND that also make a difference in improving people’s mental health.

I also love that I can just text you with questions. Any day with one less email is a better day. Not sure if you want me to advertise that perk, but it’s a great example of how easy you are to reach and how much you care.

Q: How has working with Scrappy Apparel Company contributed to building IDONTMIND?

Eddie: Scrappy has helped us make the best quality apparel we can for an accessible price and have been excellent guides as we continue to scale.

Q: Would you recommend our services to other people who want to grow their brands?

Eddie: I would recommend Scrappy for whether you’re just starting out or seasoned and know exactly what you’re looking for. Scrappy will take care of you and make it look easy.

Perceived Value: How to Charge More for Your Custom Apparel

Posted on

Here’s a fun fact for you: Supreme began as a small skateboarding shop that no one had heard of before.

Today, it is one of the most popular apparel brands in the world. (And let’s be real, it’s more than just an apparel brand—it’s a lifestyle movement.)

supreme

So, how did Supreme go from a little shop in New York City to a billion-dollar industry dominator?

The Vou wrote an amazing article that dives deep into how Supreme increased its perceived value and scaled like nobody’s business. We highly recommend it.

But if you’re in a hurry, we’ll sum up the article for you.

There are four key business strategies Supreme used to scale to the nines:

1. Supreme built a rebellious brand image that was reminiscent of contemporary art or graffiti.

Its unique look set Supreme apart from other fashion brands.

2. Supreme produced limited quantities of its clothing to increase demand.

Its exclusivity is what motivated customers to spend hours lined up outside the Supreme stores for new product launches.

3. Supreme produced limited edition items and rare collections through celebrity and influencer partnerships.

By partnering with prominent figures that aligned with its brand image, Supreme strengthened its footing as a lifestyle brand rather than just an apparel company.

4. Supreme built a powerful community of fans, resellers, and collectors.

Its community focus contributed to the hype and gave its customers a sense of belonging.

Whether your goal is to be the next Supreme or not, you can learn a lot from the fashion tycoon about how to increase the perceived value of your custom apparel.

Supreme’s level of success might feel like a distant dream, but the reality is that the brand increased the value of its apparel with each move it made.

Just like you build a Lego house brick by brick, each step you take to grow your apparel business contributes to its long-term structure.

Let’s take a look at Nike, another brand that is insanely valuable in the eyes of consumers.

In fact, Nike is currently the most valuable apparel brand—it is worth $35 billion as of 2021. Wowza!

nike highest value brand

Here’s the deal: Nike spends a lot of money on advertising itself as more than just an apparel company.

You might notice that Nike’s ads don’t usually mention the products. That’s because it uses a strategy called lifestyle branding. It is a long-term tactic that aims to connect customers with the brand itself, its mission, and its values—not necessarily the products.

Nike’s products are worth more in the eyes of the consumers who identify with the lifestyle that Nike promotes.

Now that we’ve looked at two examples of apparel companies that have high perceived value, let’s talk about you!

The global apparel market size reached $1.55 trillion in 2021, and it’s not showing any signs of slowing down.

global apparel market 2021

If big-name brands can take advantage of the boom in online apparel sales, why can’t you?

Here are seven ways to start charging more for your custom apparel:

1. Clarify your brand positioning.

This is step one. Your positioning is essentially where your brand sits in the minds of your target customers. It helps you claim your spot in the market and distinguish your brand from competitors.

If your positioning is wishy-washy, it will be much more difficult for you to justify raising the prices of your clothing because your potential customers will not understand the value of your brand.

One way to strengthen your positioning is to define your unique value proposition—or the reasons why your customers would buy from your brand instead of your competitors.

2. Gain a deep understanding of your target customers.

Yup, it’s about to get personal. Knowing the wants, needs, motivations, and purchasing habits of your customers will help you develop products and marketing campaigns that speak directly to them.

Better marketing = increased demand (and sales for you!)

3. Keep a close eye on trends, and use them strategically.

Of course, we don’t advise you to jump on every single trend that pops up. Don’t be a bandwagon hopper.

But if a trend makes sense for your brand, it could be a good one to capitalize on!

One great example is the resurgence of the ‘90s bucket hat trend. A bucket hat design would make sense if you have a streetwear brand, but maybe not if you have a feminine boho apparel line.

4. Turn your apparel into a lifestyle brand.

OK, this is easier said than done—but if you can pull it off, it’s highly effective.

Customers who are willing to pay higher prices for apparel are often using clothing to express themselves and strengthen their sense of identity.

You can start by building a community of fans around your brand. Strong customer relationships will be key.

But then, you’ll want to take the connection a step further and find ways to integrate your brand into your customers’ lives in meaningful ways.

You want to create an emotional relationship between your customers and your brands. That’s how you go from an apparel company to a lifestyle brand.

5. Invest in embellishment techniques.

Embellishments can elevate your garment tremendously. For example, our custom embroidery service can make your apparel higher-end and more professional.

Not sure which embellishments are best for your garments? Our team is happy to advise you on how to produce apparel that is more visually engaging.

6. Private label your garments.

If you’re creating apparel to sell to customers, you absolutely must private label your garments. It’s the #1 way to make your brand seem more legit.

Private labeling means printing your garments with custom neck labels that have your brand name on it.

When you work with us, private labeling will only cost you a few dollars more per garment. However, it could easily help you sell your custom apparel for 5x more.

So, the real question is: can you afford not to private label your apparel?

7. Improve the quality of your products.

Last (but certainly not least), we’d like to remind you that your product quality will be a major determining factor in how much you can charge for your custom apparel.

It will also greatly influence how many of your customers become repeat buyers.

With quality products, you can keep your customers coming back—and paying more—for your custom apparel. We recently wrote an article all about customer retention, so check it out if you want to learn more.

Our team of experts will help you increase the perceived value of your custom apparel.

From the highest-quality products on the market to affordable private labeling services, we have the resources you need to scale your brand.

Private Labeling: How to Take True Ownership of Your Custom Apparel

Posted on

Tell us: how much do you love your brand?

If you’re like us, you adore your own brand. It is your lifeblood.

You’re obsessed with it in a way that most people don’t understand.

Your family and friends might even think you’re crazy if they don’t have the same entrepreneurial spirit that you do.

Well, if you love your brand so much, don’t you think it’s worth it to spend a few dollars more per shirt to private label your custom apparel?

Let’s back up. When we say “private labeling,” we mean printing a custom neck label inside each garment you order.

We’re about to share how you can truly customize your custom apparel with a neck label of your own—but first, let’s talk more about how private labeling will take your garments to the next level.

Is private labeling worth the hype?

If you read anything we just wrote, you already know our opinion on this.

But if you skimmed the last few paragraphs (or maybe you just need more convincing), we’ll dive deeper into each reason why you should private label your custom apparel:

Private labeling gives you true ownership of your brand.

You poured your blood, sweat, and tears into your apparel designs. Don’t you want to take credit for them?

If you don’t private label your garments, you’ll likely end up in one of two scenarios:

A. The manufacturer of the garment will print their own name on the inside, thus taking credit for your hard work.

AND/OR

B. Your customers will not be able to find any identifying information about your brand inside the garments, and they will forget where they ordered the shirts from.

So, private label your garments and show your brand off to the world. Make sure no one ever forgets your name.

A custom neck label will make your brand look more legit.

You might think that no one cares about the artwork inside your garment, but that is completely false.

Sure, not everyone will see your cool custom neck label, but you know who will?

The person wearing the shirt (a.k.a. your customer!)

Nearly all reputable brands have their own names or logos printed inside of their apparel.

If you want your brand to be respected just as much as the other players in your industry, trust us—you want to private label your garments.

Private labeling gives you new creative potential.

Each label contains the standard information (which we’ll go over in a minute), but you can add a fun twist to your label if you’d like.

Think of your custom neck label as an opportunity to strengthen your brand even more. What will you do with the extra real estate?

Ready to create your custom neck label?
Let’s begin with the basics!

A standard neck label consists of:

  • Your brand name or logo
  • The size of the garment (S, M, L, XL… and so on)
  • The fabric composition
  • The country of origin (Note: this is where the garment was manufactured, not where it was printed)
  • Care instructions (usually shown with symbols)

Seems pretty straightforward, right? You’d think so, but there are so many innovative ways to present the details we listed above.

You can really let your imagination run wild as long as you include all the necessary info.

However, we do recommend formatting all text to be at least 7 pt. in size so it will be readable when it’s printed.

Don’t worry—when you work with us, our Scrappy sales reps will give you their recommendations about what will and will not work for your neck label design.

Feeling creative? Don’t worry, you are not obligated to create a boring design that looks like every other neck label on the face of the Earth.

In fact, we encourage you to color outside the lines—figuratively and literally. Seriously, tell us your crazy idea and we’ll let you know if we can print it. (Chances are that we can!)

If you want your neck label to be a little *extra,* here are a few ideas for items to add to it:

Your tagline.

Obviously, if your tagline is a mile long, it won’t fit in the small neck label space—but if you have a few punchy words that you’d like to feature inside each garment, more power to you!

The printing location.

We’ve seen brands add the printing locations to their neck labels in addition to the standard manufacturing locations.

For example: Made in Nicaragua | Printed in the USA

Brand symbols or elements.

Adding symbols or other simple graphics can add flair to your custom neck label.

Your website or social media handles.

Because why not?

If this sounds like too much work for you, we have good news.

We have two easy ways for you to check this neck label business off your list:

customer retention

How to Turn New Customers Into Raving Fans of Your Brand

Posted on

The verdict is in: customer retention saves you money.

In fact, acquiring a new customer can be seven times more expensive than continuing to sell to the customers you already have.

Chip Bell, a customer service expert and prolific writer, once said:

“Loyal customers—they don’t just come back. They don’t simply recommend you. They insist that their friends do business with you.”

Well said, Chip.

In the age of social media, everyone is a brand ambassador. All posts and mentions carry weight.

But wait, let’s rewind for a sec. Before you can encourage your customers to come back, you have to make them happy first.

Sounds easy enough, right?

You’d think so—but unfortunately, one negative experience can completely turn a customer off, even if every other interaction they had with your brand was positive.

Before we dive in to our golden rules for customer retention, let’s go over what not to do.

Here are a few mistakes that drive customers away:

Terrible customer service.

TBH, “customer neglect” and “customer disrespect” might be better phrases to describe the atrocities of poor customer service departments.

Their badges of dishonor include thousands of ignored emails, rude canned responses, and circular arguments. Yikes!

In 2022, you do not want to be a brand with bad customer service.

Any email dispute could make its way onto Twitter and go viral, so choose your words wisely when you’re communicating with unhappy customers—unless you enjoy getting roasted alive by the Internet, of course.

Lack of communication.

If the order confirmation email is the last time a customer hears from your brand, that’s a problem for a few reasons:

1. Customers want to know when their orders have shipped.
It’s crucial that you provide tracking info to your customers so they know when to expect their packages.

2. Customers are at their warmest point right after they make a purchase, so don’t ghost them!
By “warm,” we mean likely to make another purchase. Keep your brand top-of-mind by sending your leads and customers a weekly newsletter with value-based content.

3. You’re missing out on a wealth of information when you don’t regularly communicate with your customers.
Metrics like email open rate and click rate are based on the behavior of your subscribers and customers. You can gauge their interest level and segment your contact list based on the actions of recipients.

Unfulfilled promises.

There’s a reason why mediocre brands don’t become worldwide sensations.

To create a community of raving fans, you have to do more than just deliver on your promises. You have to go above and beyond to give your customers a memorable experience with your brand.

If you can’t even do the bare minimum… well, good luck.

Now, here’s how to increase customer retention and make your brand the talk of the town:

Amp up the creativity.

There’s a reason why OGs go down in history. They’re authentic, unique, and outstanding.

You want to be the OG of your industry. If you can provide original, highly creative products to your customers, they will be more likely to become repeat buyers.

So, put your thinking cap on and create something awesome!

Create a customer feedback loop.

This might sound like technical jargon at first, but it’s really simple.

A feedback loop is a process that collects comments, reviews, and testimonials from customers so you can implement their suggestions and keep them comin’ back!

You can create a customer feedback loop with an automated email that asks buyers about their experience with your brand. In the email, we recommend sending your customers a form to fill out so you can easily analyze the data when it comes in.

Don’t be shy about sharing testimonials.

After collecting tons of awesome reviews from your feedback loop, it’s time to let everyone know how great your brand is—in the words of your own customers!

Testimonials are not sales pitches, and that’s why they work so well. Sharing genuine positive feedback will give you social proof and strengthen trust with your current and future customers.

Create a loyalty program.

Did you know that members of customer loyalty programs are 75% more likely to make another purchase after receiving an incentive?

You can use a loyalty program to reward customers who are engaging with your brand. You can choose to reward purchases, newsletter subscriptions, or any actions that benefit your brand and lead to increased sales either directly or indirectly.

You can set up your loyalty program however you want, but it’s important to craft your messaging in a way that seems sincere. Otherwise, your customers might think your loyalty program is just a marketing ploy.

A “shady salesman” vibe can be a big turn-off for some customers. (Nothing against salespeople, BTW.)

Keep your mission at the forefront of your messaging.

You have the opportunity to connect with your customers through your brand’s mission.

If you’re committed to making people smile with your custom apparel, customers who value joy and positivity will understand your mission on a deeper level.

When it comes to your mission, don’t be afraid to sound off.

Make sure everyone knows who you are and what you’re about. That’s how you attract your people and keep them around.

Humanize your brand.

Somehow, a lot of people forget the human aspect of humanizing their brands.

You have to put a face to the name!

Whether you get in front of the camera yourself or show videos of your team, you’ll build trust with your prospects and customers when they see the people behind your brand.

Support causes that align with your brand values.

Millennials and Gen-Z are conscious of the brands they purchase from. They want to support companies with similar values to their own.

So, use your brand’s platform to take a stand on the issues that are important to you. Instead of driving customers away, you’ll attract a community of ride-or-die fans who will rep your brand every day!

Last but not least, the best way to keep customers coming back is to sell them high-quality products.

Now comes the part where we tell you why Scrappy Apparel is the best partner for your custom apparel project. (Sorry, not sorry!)

We’re obsessed with sourcing the best materials so we can develop products that turn our new customers into raving fans—and we’ve been successful thus far.

How To “WOW” Your Team With Company Swag They Actually Want To Wear

Posted on

When companies create custom apparel for their employees, there are two drastically different scenarios we often see:

Result #1: The new t-shirt becomes the unofficial work uniform because everyone on the team is so in love with it. They are in awe over the design, the fit, the fabric… their new work t-shirts couldn’t be any more perfect.

The employees wear their apparel with pride, which results in 24/7 brand awareness for their employer. The company logo traverses malls, beaches, ice skating rinks, movie theaters, concerts, bars… you name it.

At Scrappy Apparel, we make sure our clients get Result #1. If you work with us, your new company apparel will be so good that you think it’s straight out of a movie.

If you choose one of our competitors, we hope you end up with Result #1—but based on our knowledge of the industry, we can’t make any promises.

Unfortunately, the alternative is much bleaker. Let’s take a look:

Result #2: You never see your precious work t-shirts again because they end up in horrific places:

  • The yard sale—priced at 20 cents.
  • The bottom of the closet—buried underneath a suitcase.
  • The dog’s mouth—as a chew toy.

You get the picture. If you don’t “WOW” your team with your company swag, it will end up lost and forgotten with the other t-shirts that never made it to a coathanger.

It’s 100 percent possible to dazzle your team with custom apparel they will love. We’re going to tell you how…

…but first, let’s look at the benefits of custom apparel for companies like yours:

Custom apparel contributes to your company culture.

If you think “company culture” is a buzzphrase that no one actually cares about, think again.

Culture is the core of your business. It sets you apart from other brands in your industry—and that could be good or bad, depending on what your culture is like.

Strong company culture will keep your employees motivated and productive. It’s more than just free coffee, pizza parties, and ping-pong tournaments. When a team member is a “cultural fit” for your organization, their values and goals align with the mission of your company.

And guess what? Job seekers are not oblivious to this culture talk either. 88% of employees believe strong company culture is key to business success.

strong company culture

With a rockin’ company culture, you will attract and retain the best talent in your industry.

So, what does custom apparel have to do with all of this?

A team t-shirt is a form of validation.

When you give your employee a shirt, it’s like saying, “Hey, you are awesome. You’re a valuable part of this team. You’re capable, knowledgeable, and worthy of your position.”

In other words, custom apparel will remind your team that they are part of something bigger than themselves.

Many people get a sense of fulfillment from their work, and an amazing company t-shirt will reinforce the positive feelings your employees have toward your brand.

Your team will be less likely to goof off or loaf around while they’re wearing your brand name.

Company apparel will keep your employees in work mode while they’re on the clock.

And let’s be real, if customers can spot your logo and brand colors from a mile away, your team members will be easily identifiable—and on their best behavior if they are good employees.

Branded company apparel will establish a dress code that is both professional and comfortable for your employees.

It’s a win-win!

As long as you choose the right custom apparel partner—ahem, Scrappy Apparel—you will be able to provide your team with high-quality products that are durable, soft to the touch, and ultra-comfortable for long days at work.

It’s time to allow your team to trade in their scratchy business clothes for branded apparel that will let them be comfortable and look professional at the same time.

Your team will become just as tight-knit as the threads in your company shirts.

There is unity in uniformity.

When conflict arises, it can be easy to forget that everyone is supposed to be working together.

However, branded apparel is a reminder that every team member is contributing to the same company mission, regardless of their rank, position, or skillset.

Finally, custom apparel will make you seem legit—to your employees, external stakeholders, and everyone who comes in contact with your brand.

Custom apparel is often associated with large companies, but any business can benefit from it.

It doesn’t matter whether you have 5 employees or 5,000. Branding is crucial for companies in every stage of development.

Think of branding as a legitness scale.

If your brand is strong, you’re super legit. Everyone knows your name. You’ll be the Nike of your industry.

However, if you don’t have a powerful brand yet, you’ll be the stand selling 25 cent lemonades on the street corner when compared to the other businesses in your industry.

(We respect the lemonade stand hustle, but we imagine you’d still want to be the Nike of lemonade stands, right?)

The perceived legitimacy of your brand matters to both external and internal stakeholders.

What do we mean by this?

Both your current and future employees care about the reputation of the company they work for because they view their job as a reflection of themselves.

That’s why 69% of employers are working on employer branding strategies with their marketing teams. They want to score high on the legitness scale so they can attract rockstar employees.

employer branding strategies

If you want to take your brand to the next level, we recommend using custom apparel to strengthen your company culture and raise awareness for your products and services.

(BTW, we’re not just saying that because we’re a custom apparel company. Read our tips on how to create an unstoppable brand.)

We’ll help you create custom apparel your employees will sport for years to come.

Here’s some friendly advice from our in-house experts:

1. Choose the right custom apparel partner.

Before we even get into the other seven tips, we want to emphasize the importance of working with a custom apparel partner that actually cares about you.

Our customer service is unmatched, and we provide support to our partners throughout the entire ordering process. We triple-check every design to ensure the placement is correct.

We achieve perfection with every order. No excuses. Only results.

We’ve had the opportunity to work with companies of all sizes. Check out some of the brands that have trusted us with their custom apparel projects.

2. Don’t ever skimp on product quality.

At Scrappy Apparel, we believe our customers deserve the best—so, we give it to them.

Over the years, we have carefully sourced and handpicked our products to ensure our customers receive the most luxurious, comfortable, and breathable fabrics to make their custom apparel dreams come true.

No one wants to wear a stiff, rough, or itchy t-shirt. Fabric quality will make or break your custom apparel, and it will definitely determine whether your employees wear it or not.

Now that we’re on the topic, we would like to mention that our products contain the highest quality Peruvian Pima Cotton, which is the softest cotton in the world.

Think about how your all-time favorite t-shirt feels. That’s what you’ll get when you order products from us. You’re welcome (in advance).

3. Also, don’t ever skimp on printing quality.

We won’t lie—we have a strong opinion on which printing technique is the best. (Well, that’s a humble statement. Our “opinion” is actually a fact.)

Many of our competitors use a technique called direct-to-garment (DTG) printing. We don’t recommend using DTG because you’ll end up with a product that fades after every single wash.

If you want your custom apparel to stand the test of time, our Retail Ready Screen Printing service will be perfect for you.

4. When in doubt, keep your design simple.

Elaborate artwork is wonderful—but in professional settings, it may be best to take a minimalistic approach with your branded apparel.

If you want your employees to actually wear their company swag, it’s best to choose a design that will appeal to everyone, even if you have people of different age ranges and backgrounds on your team.

There’s nothing wrong with using statement artwork for your custom apparel. However, you may end up with employees who aren’t fans of the design, no matter how brilliant it is.

Remember, simple is wearable. You can save your rainbow-colored illustrations for other projects if they’re not a good fit for your company’s custom apparel right now.

5. Be precise with your logo placement.

Especially if your company logo is the focal point of your design, you want to make sure its placement is perfect.

The chest and upper back are two of the best locations to place a logo because they will be visible on every shirt, no matter who is wearing it.

You can reference these logo placement guidelines for your custom apparel:

Chest

  • Center of chest: Place the logo 4 to 6 inches below the neck seam
  • Left of chest: Place the logo 7 to 9 inches below the left shoulder

Back

  • Center of back: Place the logo 6 to 8 inches below the neck seam

6. Think about who will be wearing your custom apparel.

Let’s say you have a dope design, but you can’t picture your 50-year-old CPA wearing it.

If your goal is to create unity among your team by encouraging each member to wear the same exact design, you might have to ditch the skulls and stick to a simple logo-based design for your company shirt.

On the other hand, if your team consists of a bunch of 20-something-year-old Californians who all skateboard on their lunch breaks, you might be able to have more fun with your custom apparel designs.

7. Take ownership of your custom apparel with private labeling.

We don’t own your brand. You do.

That’s why we offer private labeling, which means we’ll print your brand name inside the neck label of your garment.

Even though the neck label doesn’t show on the outside, your employees will see it. Private labeling helps your brand appear more legitimate and professional.

Obviously, Walt Disney is the creator of one of the most iconic brands of all time. He once said, “There’s no magic in magic. It’s all in the details.”

A private label is an example of a small detail that makes a huge difference in how your employees will view your brand.

If we’re referencing the legitness scale again, private labeling will score your company a 12/10.

8. Above all, stay true to your brand.

If you’ve created custom apparel before, this might be self-explanatory for you.

However, we want to reiterate this point because we know it can be easy to get sucked into the social media black hole and start comparing your custom apparel to the other designs you see on the Internet.

Comparison is dangerous, and here’s why.

As you find aspects of other custom apparel designs that you like, you might want to throw your brand guidelines out the window and start all the way over. (By the way, if you’re thinking about doing this, you should NOT.)

Branding, like any form of art, is subjective. Another brand’s cool factor doesn’t make yours any less cool.

Instead of looking outside of your company for custom apparel inspiration, why not revisit your brand guidelines and stick to them?

The colors, fonts, and symbols you’re already using will work just fine. You don’t need to reinvent the wheel with every new design you create.

After all, your employees already know and love your company. Why mess with perfection?

Let’s give your employees their new favorite t-shirts.

Our team will guide your project from start to finish. You can sit back and relax while we check every box to ensure your order turns out exactly how you imagined it would.

All you have to do is take the first step. Request your free quote today.

13 Celebrity T-Shirt Designs to Inspire Your Custom Apparel

Posted on

Leonardo da Vinci was on to something when he said, “Simplicity is the ultimate sophistication.”

Our buddy Leo’s claim might be centuries old, but it still rings true today with the graphic t-shirt trend that is prevalent in both casual attire and higher-end looks.

T-shirts are universal. You could score a cool band t-shirt at the thrift store for $5, or you could go to Dior and spend thousands on a shirt that is 100% cotton—just like the $16 ones you find at Walmart.

Now, don’t take this the wrong way. Materials do matter. At Scrappy Apparel, we use the highest quality Peruvian Pima Cotton that is wearable, breathable, and all-around awesome. (Shameless plug.)

However, materials are not the only factor that contributes to the perceived value of a t-shirt.

Branding is the main factor. That’s why a Balenciaga tee costs 50 times more than an Old Navy one.

Balenciaga is a luxury brand that reserves its products for affluent and prestigious customers, whereas Old Navy is a family-oriented brand that sells its apparel at a more accessible price point.

You might automatically think that luxury brands bring in more revenue than budget-friendly brands, but that’s not always the case.

For example, Balenciaga generated $2.3 billion in revenue last year. Not bad at all.

But you want to know how much Old Navy brought in?

$7.5 billion in 2021—which is $5.2 billion more than Balenciaga.

We’re sharing this example to emphasize that you don’t have to charge $1,000 for a t-shirt to have a successful apparel company. You just have to get your brand positioning right.

Interestingly enough, the price point of a shirt doesn’t always matter to celebrities either.

Sure, we often see famous people wearing Gucci, Givenchy, or Balmain—but we also see celebrities wearing the same t-shirts we have in our own closets, like an LA Dodgers shirt that retails for $27.99.

Don’t be fooled, though. There is a method to the madness.

Wait, there’s a strategy behind celebrity fashion?

We’d say so—and fashion tycoons like Rihanna would agree.

After all, we can only imagine the challenges celebrities face in the limelight.

As laymen (a.k.a. people with fewer than 1 million Instagram followers), we can walk outside wearing whatever we want without risking media backlash or thousands of angry tweets.

Celebrities have many luxuries, but freedom isn’t always one of them. They must make intentional apparel choices to avoid getting #canceled.

In light of that knowledge, let’s explore famous fashion trends that might inspire your custom apparel. Here are 13 examples of celebrity t-shirts in the wild:

Giovanna Engelbert

Wearing your own apparel to New York Fashion Week is a boss move.

As the Global Creative Director of Swarovski Group, Giovanna Engelbert knows her personal style like the back of her hand.

She wore the “Fashion Emergency” t-shirt pictured above during NYFW in 2017. The tee is part of an apparel line inspired by Engelbert’s book, Gio_Graphy: Fun in the Wild World of Fashion.

Engelbert proves that t-shirts can be appropriate in any setting when worn with the right attire.

Our Scrappy Takeaway

Think about all the different ways your customers might wear your custom apparel. How can you make your designs more versatile?

Steve Aoki

We often wonder what it’s like to be Steve Aoki. If we could trade lives with someone for a day, he would be high up on our list.

One minute, Aoki is throwing a cake into the crowd at a festival, and the next minute he’s creating dope apparel designs to promote his music label, Dim Mak. The brand name is a reference to Bruce Lee, Aoki’s childhood idol.

The t-shirt shown above features cartoon-like illustrations and lettering that is reminiscent of superhero comics. No work. All play.

Our Scrappy Takeaway

Whatever you do, don’t make your custom apparel boring. When you have fun with your designs, you’ll grow your brand and attract people who want to wear your clothes.

Camila Cabello

Let’s rewind for a sec—remember when we said that celebrities have to be strategic with their attire?

Camila Cabello’s “Resist” t-shirt is a perfect example of that. She wore the t-shirt during a benefit concert for the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU), an organization that focuses on preserving the rights and liberties of the American people.

Although the ACLU is nonpartisan, it is an organization that makes its own political statements. We are not here to do that.

However, we do want to highlight that celebrities like Cabello will often wear t-shirts that raise awareness for political or social issues that they care about.

Our Scrappy Takeaway

Think about what message you want to drive home with your custom apparel. Are there current events, issues, or topics you want to raise awareness about?

A$AP Rocky

Tie-dye is timeless. If you disagree, we think you should talk to A$AP Rocky.

Once again, we have a celebrity who took casual attire up a notch by pairing it with dressier pieces. Wearing the collared button-down underneath the tie-dye shirt was a genius move.

Our Scrappy Takeaway

Predictable is boring. If you leverage a timeless trend when creating your custom apparel, sprinkle in something unexpected to make it your own.

After all, “timeless” doesn’t mean “dated.” Trends that have been around for a while often need a unique twist to keep them fresh.

Pete Wentz

Okay, here’s another tie-dye example that demonstrates the last point we made.

We love to see Pete Wentz of Fall Out Boy repping his label, Decaydance Records—but what we love even more is this tie-dye and split-dye combination on the t-shirt.

In this case, the split-dye style is the twist that the timeless tie-dye needs.

Our Scrappy Takeaway

We’ve said this twice already, but we’ll say it again to drive our point home. Avoid being boring at all costs!

J Balvin

J Balvin is the Prince of Reggaeton, and he wants everyone to know it.

Yup, he’s wearing a t-shirt with his own name on it. We support it, though. We’re here for the self-love.

The shirt Balvin is wearing above is a product of his collaboration with A Bathing Ape, a Japanese fashion brand founded by Nigo.

The brand is renowned for its wildly popular Baby Milo character, which is featured on the shirt alongside a rather kawaii illustration of Balvin himself.

Our Scrappy Takeaway

Strategic collaborations can help you grow your brand, but choose your partners wisely!

Sarah Hyland

Here’s a thought-starter for you—since celebrities have such huge platforms, do you think they have more of a responsibility to stand up for the issues they believe in?

Actress and singer Sarah Hyland definitely thinks so. She has been vocal in her support of the Time’s Up movement, which she is repping in the photo above.

The organization’s mission is to eliminate gender-based discrimination and violence in the workplace.

Our Scrappy Takeaway

Here’s another question to ponder—does your brand have an obligation to take a stance on anything?

Billie Eilish

A stage presence like Billie Eilish’s calls for a rad outfit to go with it.

Her matching t-shirt and pants depict a three-headed dog that honestly reminds us of Fluffy, the Cerberus creature that was protecting the Sorcerer’s Stone in the first installment of Harry Potter.

Anyway, let’s get back to Billie. She wears whatever the heck she wants, and we think that’s dope.

Our Scrappy Takeaway

Don’t be afraid to take risks with your apparel designs. If your deepest desire is to create a shirt with a bright blue three-headed dog on it, you have our blessing.

Rita Ora

Rita Ora’s “Grenfell” shirt uses three colors and a simple design. It’s not overwhelming to the eye. However, the shirt’s message speaks volumes.

Ora’s tee shows support for Justice4Grenfell, an organization that strives to obtain justice for the victims of the Grenfell Tower fire of June 2017. The fire was one of the United Kingdom’s most tragic disasters.

Anyone who knows the history of the event would understand Ora’s shirt, which honors the lives of the victims.

Our Scrappy Takeaway

Your apparel design doesn’t necessarily need bold, crazy colors to make an impact. It just needs a well-articulated message that speaks directly to your target audience.

Diplo

Our next celebrity guest doesn’t need an introduction.

Even if you’ve never heard Diplo’s name, we bet you know one of his songs. He is an iconic DJ, producer, and songwriter who has been in the game for the last 25 years.

Major Lazer is a DJ trio that consists of Diplo, Walshy Fire, and Ape Drums. TBH, if we were in a DJ group, we would have a t-shirt for every day of the week to promote our brand. We don’t blame Diplo for the self-promo.

Diplo’s Major Lazer t-shirt looks like an at-home spray painting project—in the best way possible, of course. The DIY look definitely brings the cool factor.

Our Scrappy Takeaway

Ask yourself: do you want your apparel designs to be tight and detail-oriented, or will you go for more of an effortless style?

Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson

Let’s face it—Dwayne Johnson is good at just about everything he does. (Are we sure he’s human?)

Therefore, if the man wants to wear a bright yellow shirt with neon orange tigers on it, we already know he can do it and still look like a beast.

Our Scrappy Takeaway

In your custom apparel, neon colors will exude confidence and boss energy.

Jaden Smith

Jaden Smith may be an actor and rapper, but he is also a fashion icon. (Before you ask—yes, he is Will Smith’s son.)

If you’re also wondering what the heck SYRE means, we’ll fill you in.

SYRE: A Beautiful Confusion is Smith’s debut studio album that dropped in 2017. (Side note—can you believe 2017 was 5 years ago? That is just scary.)

The hoodie in the photo above features the title of the album. The apparel is part of a line by MSFTSrep, the “art collective” that includes Jaden Smith, Willow Smith (you guessed it—Will Smith’s daughter), and Harry Hudson.

Our Scrappy Takeaway

Music is one pillar of a brand, and custom apparel is another. If you are a musician, artist, content creator, or maker of any kind, you can use custom apparel to strengthen your brand.

Alison Wonderland

We all know oversized t-shirts are comfortable to sleep in—but apparently, they’re also the perfect complement to high-energy electronic music sets at festivals with thousands of attendees.

And by the way, we’re not talking about the festivalgoers. DJ and producer Alison Wonderland is known for wearing oversized t-shirts during her performances. Actually, we don’t think we’ve ever seen her not wearing a huge tee.

In the photo above, you’ll see her wearing a shirt with an all-over black and white print. Hello, contrast!

Our Scrappy Takeaway

You’ll make a statement with your custom apparel when you use a bold print with high-contrast colors.

Tip: Complementary colors create the strongest contrast possible.

Now that we’ve taken a tour of celebrity style, we hope you’re ready to bring your A-game for your custom apparel designs.

Remember, the takeaways we shared are not the be-all and end-all of custom apparel.

When you create your designs, it’s crucial for you to stay true to your brand and creative vision.

That being said, we think it’s fun to check out what other people are wearing. Whether you gained inspiration from this article or not, we hope you realize that apparel is highly subjective.

There is no right or wrong in general—but there is right and wrong for your brand specifically. That’s why it’s so important to keep your brand’s mission and message at the forefront of your apparel designs.

How to Sell Your Custom Apparel on TikTok

How to Sell Your Custom Apparel on TikTok

Posted on

In 2022, there are two types of people:

A. TikTok lovers who are delighted by the endless stream of on-demand content at their fingertips

AND

B. People who wish TikTok would die and go to the social media graveyard with MySpace, Vine, and Google Plus (R.I.P.)

Regardless of which bucket you fall into, you can’t deny that TikTok is a powerhouse marketing platform that has influence over its users’ purchasing decisions.

On the surface, TikTok might seem like a place for kids to lip-sync, dance, and film silly pranks. But did you know that TikTok is expected to surpass 1.5 billion users in 2022?

That’s a heck of a lot of people. TikTok’s cultural influence is growing as we speak.

One key lesson we’ve learned about social media is that:

More time spent on an app = More monetization opportunities for creators, brands, and businesses of all kinds

So, what does this have to do with custom apparel?

TikTok is a melting pot of content. There’s a niche for any video you can think of. Even better, TikTok has an organic-first algorithm that empowers creators of all sizes.

So, is there potential for your custom apparel brand to succeed on TikTok? You bet there is.

But wait—before you run off and create your TikTok profile, let’s talk about the type of content that performs well on the platform.

TikTok users do not scroll through the app to consume stuffy, cumbersome, or overly promotional content. They want to be entertained, not sold to.

As a brand, it’s important to stay true to your identity and values when you create content on TikTok. You definitely don’t have to post crude humor or twerking videos if that’s not your thing.

Instead, focus on positioning your brand as an expert in your industry while providing value to your target audience (in an entertaining way, of course!)

Here are four examples of rockin’ TikTok content that you could recreate to promote your own custom apparel:

Style Tips

Posting a photo of a t-shirt online isn’t always enough to make a sale.

If your potential customers can’t see how your products would fit into their wardrobe, they might decide not to make a purchase.

So, you should show them—and a fun TikTok video on how to style your apparel is a phenomenal way to do it.

Show Your Products

TikTok users might not want to be sold to. However, they do want to see cool stuff.

We both know your custom apparel has the cool factor. Give it the attention it deserves with a product feature video!

Creative editing is key to keep viewers interested. We also recommend using trending audio to maximize your views. Have fun, and good luck!

Leverage Trends

TikTok trends consist of videos that piggyback off one another by following a theme and often using the same audio.

Trends exist across the platform, but you may also find some that are only popular within niche communities.

As you scroll through TikTok, think about how you can put your own twist on existing trends to make them relevant to your brand.

Tell Your Story

Have a story to tell? You’re in luck.

The TikTok algorithm judges videos on how well they engage viewers. Watch time is a key metric the algorithm uses to decide which videos to push out to a wider audience.

One surefire way to captivate an audience is by telling a compelling story.

Remember how we said there’s a niche for every video on TikTok? There’s a group of people who will become raving fans of your brand after hearing your unique story.

The coolest thing about storytelling on TikTok is that it doesn’t rely on production or editing skills. All you need is a voice and a message to share with the world.

Think about the challenges you faced and how you overcame them. How can you inspire others by sharing your experiences?

How 10 YouTubers Use Custom Apparel to Grow Their Communities

Posted on

There’s more to merch than meets the eye.

Branded merchandise has been used as a community-building tool for decades. We’re willing to bet you have a t-shirt in your closet that commemorates an event you attended, a cause you support, or a band you love.

Fast forward to 2022: the age of influencers, content creators, and personal brand empires.

YouTubers are the new age celebrities. (In case you’ve been living under a rock, a YouTuber is a content creator who publishes videos on YouTube.)

To stay in the limelight, YouTubers must continuously find new ways to delight their existing fan base while attracting fresh eyes to their content.

Custom apparel can achieve both of those goals. Keep reading, and we’ll tell you how.

YouTube has come a long way since its launch in 2005. Today, it is the world’s second most visited website and there are approximately 30,000 hours of video uploaded every hour.

And it’s not just for kids either. 74% of adults in the U.S. use YouTube.

youtube usage

Whether you like it or not, YouTube isn’t slowing down anytime soon—and neither are the monetization opportunities for content creators on the platform.

In a study conducted by Talkshoppe and Google (a.k.a. YouTube’s adoptive daddy), 70% of viewers bought from a brand after seeing it on YouTube.

So, why custom apparel?

We can’t think of any full-time YouTubers that only have one stream of revenue.

You know why? Because relying on a single revenue stream is risky, especially in the online business world.

Sponsorships, affiliate marketing, and Google Adsense are a few of the ways YouTubers make money. Although these strategies can be lucrative, they are unpredictable.

So many things could go wrong. For example:

  • A brand could forget to pay for a sponsored campaign
  • An affiliate program could close
  • Google Adsense could change their policies (as they often do)

That’s why YouTubers focus on diversifying their incomes as they scale.

Instead of relying on YouTube for a paycheck, many creators choose to take their power back by selling their own products.

The cool thing about custom apparel is that it’s not just a product to sell. It’s a brand asset that YouTubers can use to grow their communities, strengthen their brands, and increase their revenue.

Check out how these successful YouTubers leverage custom apparel as a brand asset (and an additional revenue stream!)

Team NINJA is the brand the prolific gamer launched to sell his very own custom apparel. Although the clothing company is tied to Ninja’s personal brand, it is a standalone entity and has plenty of room to scale beyond Ninja’s platform.

Some of the designs in Ninja’s merch store follow the same minimalistic style as big-name streetwear brands. Others feature an all-over print or a more outspoken design.

It seems like Ninja is in it to win it—not just in Fortnite, but also in the apparel space.

We won’t dive too deep into what ASMR is, but basically it is a tingling, calming sensation that is caused by certain triggers. It can help with relaxation or sleep.

Some people refer to ASMR as “the weird side of YouTube.” But regardless of how you feel about ASMR itself, you cannot deny that it is a fascinating niche to analyze from a branding perspective.

ASMR channels form tight-knit communities of people who become raving fans of their favorite creators within the niche. Just look at the comment section of any ASMR video, and you will find countless inside jokes and friendly banter among viewers.

Gibi ASMR has over 4 million subscribers on YouTube. Based on the wildly positive feedback she receives on her videos, we’re willing to bet that many of those people would buy her merch.

In The Official Gibi Clothing Store, the ASMR mogul sells a variety of apparel, including hats, hoodies, and t-shirts. Some of her designs simply contain her logo, while others feature the quirky characters she portrays in her videos.

As of February 2022, MrBeast does not offer any of his own merch, but he is one of the founders of #TEAMSEAS, an apparel company with a mission to clean up 30 million pounds of trash from beaches, rivers, and the ocean. All the proceeds from merch sales go toward the company’s mission.

We wanted to feature the #TEAMSEAS project because it’s a wonderful example of how custom apparel can be used for philanthropy, especially when leveraging a popular YouTuber’s platform to raise awareness.

Although she does not stick to one niche specifically, she has built a thriving community of supporters since she started creating videos in 2016. Kiki Chanel also regularly streams on Twitch and enjoys starting conversations with her fans as if they are her friends.

Kiki Chanel’s merch designs are mostly minimalistic, but they stay true to the ultra-feminine and chic vibe she brings to her YouTube channel.

Aileen Xu is the mastermind behind Lavendaire. Her content focuses on intentional living, mindfulness, personal growth, and self-discovery.

Although Lavendaire began as a blog and YouTube channel in 2014, it gradually expanded into a lifestyle movement—and multiple revenue streams for Xu.

One of the verticals in the Lavendaire business model is an online store that features planners, journals, workbooks, stickers, and… you guessed it! Custom apparel.

The loungewear designs in the store follow the muted color palette of the brand and contain Lavendaire’s iconic slogan, “Artist of Life.”

Loungewear is currently the only apparel you can order from the Lavendaire store, but there is plenty of opportunity for the brand to introduce new products in the future.

7. Safiya Nygaard

Safiya Nygaard rose to fame after she began working at Buzzfeed as a video producer in 2015.

Two years later, she parted ways with the network, but now she has a successful YouTube channel of her own that boasts over 9 million subscribers.

Nygaard is known for creating click-worthy lifestyle videos about random topics. In other words, she is in the “no niche” niche.

Even so, her viewership is consistent because she curates interesting storylines for her videos and she has a magnetic personality that makes her fun to watch.

Fiendish Behavior is the name of Nygaard’s apparel line. The artwork is edgy and borderline gothic, but also reminiscent of streetwear. Many of her designs play into the line art trend that is prominent in modern t-shirt culture.

8. PewDiePie

With 111 million YouTube subscribers, PewDiePie is a household name. You might have seen his entertaining videos, but did you know that he also has his own apparel company?

PewDiePie created Tsuki Market with Marzia Kjellberg, who is an illustrious Internet personality, fashion designer, and businesswoman. (She also happens to be PewDiePie’s wife.)

The dynamic duo create all the apparel designs for Tsuki Market themselves. The store features t-shirts, hoodies, accessories, and even a candy shop with authentic Japanese offerings.

Tsuki Market sticks to a neutral palette with little pops of color and embroidered details. The “less is more” approach works well for the designs here.

Grace Helbig

9. Grace Helbig

Grace Helbig is a comedian and YouTuber who claims to be “consistently inconsistent” at pretty much everything she does—but by our measure, she does a great job of showing up for her audience on a regular basis!

Helbig hosts a podcast called #NotTooDeep, a lighthearted and funny interview show that attracts a loyal fanbase to her platform. By speaking with other prominent Internet personalities on her podcast, Helbig grows her online presence even more.

After looking at Helbig’s merch store, we can infer that restocking inventory may be one of the things she is consistently inconsistent with. As of Feb. 2022, all of her products are sold out—but that didn’t stop us from looking through her dope apparel designs!

Helbig’s merch offers a variety of styles, including tie-dye patterns, embroidered logos, and a shirt that dupes the JAWS movie poster and shows an illustration of Helbig’s face.

An interesting selection of products indeed.

10. Julia Mazzucato

Last (but definitely not least) we want to talk about Julia Mazzucato, a beauty and lifestyle YouTuber from Southern California.

Unlike many of the YouTubers on this list, Mazzucato does not have millions of subscribers, and she has not been active on her channel in over a year.

However, we want to feature her apparel store because we think she has produced some awesome work.

Instead of depicting rainbows and butterflies, Mazzucato’s merch line hones in on human anatomy, often showing organs or delicate-looking hands. She pairs the slightly morbid illustrations with flowers and other symbols of femininity.

The aesthetic of Mazzucato’s merchandise is immaculate, and other content creators with a similar style could definitely take inspiration from her designs.

Inspired By The Sea And Legends In The Community, Northern Nav Makes A Splash With Its Cool Custom Apparel

Posted on

We had the opportunity to chat with Tim Leigh-Manuell, the creative mastermind behind Northern Nav, to hear about his journey in starting his own apparel company.

We’re proud to support Tim and Northern Nav in their initiatives to educate the public, provide assistance to those in need, and protect the environment.

Check out our conversation with Tim below:

Q: Hey, Tim! Thanks for chatting with us today. First, we’d like to hear about Northern Nav. What is your company’s mission?

Well… it all started during COVID. In the summertime, I pilot a ferry to Fire Island. During 2020, I decided to let the younger captains take the few hours that were available.

I ended up missing the bay, and so I decided to purchase a boat with my brother-in-law… who didn’t know anything about boating. I found myself teaching all the tricks I learned growing up in my 20+ years of being a captain.

The actual idea of Northern Nav has always been building in my head, but what 41-year-old male decides to start a clothing company?

That’s where the cocktails came in to play. After a few minutes of unloading all my thoughts and dreams… my family looked back at me and said, “We’re in!”

To make a long story longer… our mission is to provide our customers with high-quality lifestyle clothing that teaches them some old salt nautical knowledge.

We also expanded to include local legends… which pay homage to some of our favorite spots, all while putting some money away for the do-gooders already doing great things.

Q: How long have you been in business?

Although there was some work prior, we launched our brand on January 15, 2021.

Q: It’s wonderful that you support local legends like Save The Great South Bay. How did you decide to partner with them?

We decided to donate a portion of all sales to Save the Great South Bay because they help protect the water I grew up on. They have been doing great things for years, such as actively restoring the bay, and with that, strengthening South Shore communities.

Q: How did you first hear about Scrappy Apparel?

When starting Northern Nav, I did a ton of research to find a company with high-quality printing and exceptional service. I came across Scrappy Apparel online and knew this was the place.

Q: Why did you decide to work with us?

The exceptional service went far beyond that of screening a few tees. Since I was new to the business, I had a ton of questions on almost everything.

Ramil helped me with orders, ideas, concepts and gave plenty of help along the way. Grant even called me to answer some questions and provide guidance. The level of service was unparalleled.

Q: We’ve worked together for several months now. What has your experience been like?

Every interaction I’ve had with Scrappy has been positive. They make reordering simple and make ordering new designs a piece of cake.

Q: How quickly did you see results after we started working together?

Upon launching our store, we saw success right away. Customers loved the tees and the quality that was offered. I think it helps us stand apart from other companies.

Q: Your designs are iconic! Where do you find inspiration for your apparel?

I find inspiration from the things that I love. I guess it resonates with others too. Boaters and skiers all seem to be happy people, and that’s who I like to surround myself with in life.

Q: What do you think makes a great t-shirt design?

Three things… simple design, quality fabrics and screening, and a message that hits home.

Q: What is your opinion on Scrappy Apparel’s Brand Building Process (BBP)?

As mentioned above, it is amazing. They helped all along the way and made it extremely easy for the new guy.

Q: What has been your favorite part about working with Scrappy Apparel?

The ease at which creating my visions comes to fruition.

Q: Would you recommend our services to other people who want to grow their brands?

100%!
